Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success.

Come and be a part of this success.

We are excited to announce a new job opportunity within our organisation for the role of Specialist Indigenous Support Liaison (ISL). Join our team to help shape the future at our Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) Newman and Pt Hedland sites by taking a leading role in delivering a positive employee experience for the Indigenous workforce at BHP.

About Us

At BHP, we aim to foster a culturally safe, respectful, and supportive environment for Indigenous employees that meets their workplace, social and cultural needs. Our commitment to Traditional Owner groups and Indigenous communities goes beyond mere words, and the company continually strives to improve its practices and outcomes. By working closely with Traditional Owner groups and Indigenous peoples, and respecting their rights and cultures, BHP aims to create a positive and lasting change.

About this Role

The Specialist ISL works alongside Leaders to improve the experience of Indigenous-identified employees in WAIO, while also contributing to enhanced cultural safety and wellbeing across the workplace.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve as a key point of contact for Indigenous employees, through the provision of personalised support and advice to improve employee experience.
  • Advocate for Indigenous perspectives and cultural capability.
  • Champion the application of the BHP Indigenous Cultural Safety Framework (ICSF) and support other Indigenous employee-focused initiatives aligned to the Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), and cultural safety and wellbeing broadly.
  • Work alongside leaders and employees on Indigenous social, cultural and recognition matters for site level activities.
  • Where Indigenous employee and/or site needs intersect with local communities, partner with Indigenous Engagement to facilitate any necessary engagement with Prescribed Bodies Corporate (PBCs), Traditional Owner corporations and local communities.

Qualifications & Skills to be successful in this role

  • Experience in engaging with diverse stakeholders including diverse cultures and/or Indigenous peoples.
  • An understanding of and experience in the mining sector and BHP’s operating environment is recommended but not mandatory.
  • Relevant vocational, TAFE or University qualifications (e.g. HR/ER, healthcare, community development) are recommended but not mandatory.
  • Previous experience in a similar role in case management, advocacy, community development or human services is recommended but not mandatory.

Location

In these residential roles, on a Monday-Friday roster, you can choose to be based at either Newman or Pt Hedland.
Residing in the Pilbara, you will be provided with subsidised rental accommodation in addition to power and water subsidies.

Newman
Spanning two sites just out of the township of Newman, we pride ourselves on over 50 years of history holding claim to the worlds largest open cut iron ore mine at Newman West and a fully autonomous site at Newman East, employing over 1500 people.

The 6,000 strong population of Newman enjoys well-established town facilities including a newly revitalised town centre and sporting facilities. As a gateway to the Karijini National Park, you will be in close proximity to spectacular gorges, water courses and stunningly unique landscapes.

Pt Hedland
Port Hedland is home to our port and rail operations and is the largest regional centre in North West Australia. The 20,000-strong population enjoys well-established education services, entertainment, shopping and medical facilities.

The excellent sporting and leisure facilities include; a new aquatic centre, sports stadium and water play park. Its beaches and mangroves are home to an abundance of fish and other wildlife. Within driving distance are the spectacular Broome, Karratha and Karijini National Park.
