About the team
- The Legal & Regulatory team sits within the Sustainability, External Affairs, Legal, Risk and Compliance function (SEAL RC) in Telstra. SEAL RC engages with our external stakeholders to support the business, shapes and influences outcomes, builds and maintains relationships with government, regulators and media, and helps mitigate legal and regulatory risk.

The role with us
- We are seeking a strong, practical and strategically minded professional who is excited by the challenge of working in an industry with very active regulators. You will ideally have experience in providing regulatory and competition advice, and advocacy, in order to support Telstra’s strategic objectives. This role will suit someone seeking an autonomous role advising on a dynamic range of issues in the ever evolving environment in which Telstra operates and on some of Telstra’s most strategic projects working with, and learning from, an exceptional team of professionals.
Key responsibilities
As a Legal and/or Regulatory Adviser, you draw on your expertise, combined with your evolving breadth of experience to deliver against the following responsibilities:
- Give advice that is clear, commercial, fit-for purpose and tailored to the audience based on your understanding of the strategic priorities, requirements and current and emerging risks.
- Effectively manage an appropriate volume of work of a complexity commensurate with your experience by being well organised, delivering on agreed commitments and prioritising competing demands.
- Provide support on strategic projects, by identifying issues and risks that may have a significant impact on the business, providing expert guidance and project management, applying critical thinking, sharing informed insights, and implementing innovative solutions that achieve strategic objectives and resolve complex issues.
- Authentically engage, build, and maintain trusted and collaborative working relationships across SEAL RC, as well as internal and external (regulatory and industry) stakeholders, by assisting them with matters, processes, and standards.
- Apply a continuous improvement mindset when providing support to clients, by sharing great ideas and contributing to initiatives which help drive productivity improvements and maximise client experience outcomes.
- Have a customer first mindset.
- Provide training and updates to internal clients and develop precedents and tools to enhance client legal knowledge and expertise in collaboration with other colleagues.
About you
To be successful in the role, you'll bring skills and experience in:
- Qualifications : Tertiary qualification in Law (and admitted to practice in Australia), Engineering, Public Policy, Technology, MBA or other relevant discipline.

Capability :
- Strong commercial and/or regulatory experience (4 years PQE or 4 years as a regulatory adviser is highly desirable)
- Strong project management skills built through managing complex matters, such as large transactions or regulatory investigations
- Ability to engage with and influence senior stakeholders and explain complex issues clearly and concisely, as well as balancing and prioritising workload
- Experience and expertise in advising on and shaping regulation
- Adaptable and flexible mindset
- Ability to write in plain English and advocate skilfully, as evidenced through contract drafting and negotiation, or preparing submissions and interacting with external stakeholders (note that we may ask preferred candidates to complete a written exercise to test these skills)
- Strong commercial acumen and demonstrated ability to build strong business relationships
- Ability to manage projects autonomously and under pressure, as well as balancing and prioritising workload
It would also be desirable to have experience in one or more of the following areas:
- background in engineering or economics
- experience in ex ante telecommunications regulation and/or competition law
- prior exposure to ACCC informal clearance and authorisation proceedings
- advising on cybersecurity, privacy, Telecommunications Act and/or Radiocommunications Act obligations
- experience working in a telecommunications business or engineering environment, or regulator
- experience in product lifecycle management (launches, enhancements, exits)
- handling regulatory incidents,
- experience participating in industry associations and advocating for change within such organisations. and/or
- TCP Code obligations and advisory work related to the Australian Consumer Law
