Senior Scientist Microbiology

- Provide effective communication and actively lead and/or participate in teamwork as required.
- Liaise with other health professionals, supervisors, stakeholders, and clients as required.
- Actively participate in quality or service improvement activities.
- Review external Quality Assurance and Quality Control results from national organisations (RCPA, NRL) and issue reports to management.
- Liaise with supervisory staff regarding problem solving of aberrant assays and implementation of changes necessary to ensure quality outcomes for all activities.
- Lead Clinical Assistant meetings, this includes compiling the agenda, holding the meeting, and taking and distributing the minutes.
- Undertake higher duties when supervisory scientists are on leave.
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following-
- Demonstrated high level knowledge, expertise, and skill in the delivery of scientific judgement within the discipline of microbiology including reading, interpretation and reporting of microscopy, culture and susceptibility testing. The microbiology laboratory at PAH also performs serology testing and molecular detection of respiratory viruses and demonstrated knowledge in these areas is desired.
- Ability to facilitate training and education of staff and contribute to the laboratory quality management system, this includes responsibility for the EQAP program in the laboratory.
- Ability to participate in a Microbiology team and contribute a range of diagnostic skills relevant to the discipline.
- Ability to provide clinical services of a complex nature, where established principles, procedures and methods may require some expansion, adaptation, or modification.
- Ability to identify, develop and implement quality and service improvement activities in accordance with National Association of Testing Authorities and International Organisation of Standardisation (NATA/ISO) accreditation/certification.
- The successful applicant must hold a Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Laboratory Science) degree, or an equivalent qualification.
- Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the appropriate supervisor/manager prior to the commencement of duties.
