We are a diverse team committed to protecting Australia’s agricultural trade and animal health. Our work is crucial in maintaining Australia’s animal health status, securing overseas markets, and shielding our environment from exotic diseases.

This is where you play an important role. As the Senior Veterinary Officer (SVO) at the Mickleham Post Entry Quarantine Facility (PEQ), you’ll lead a veterinary team in managing the quarantine of around 5000 cats and dogs, 700 horses, and various consignments of hatching eggs, ensuring compliance with Australia’s stringent biosecurity regulations. Your role is vital in preventing biosecurity threats and supporting the safe importation of live animals into Australia.

What you’ll do

• Lead, manage, and coordinate a veterinary team, fostering a high-performing and collaborative environment.
• Think strategically to develop and implement long-term plans, addressing complex biosecurity challenges.
• Communicate with domestic and international stakeholders, representing the department in relevant forums and conveying complex technical information clearly.
• Provide expert advice on the importation of live animals, ensuring compliance with Australian and international regulations.
• Build team capabilities through training, mentoring, and support, ensuring professional qualifications and expertise are maintained.
