JUNIOR GROUP LEADER (F/M/X)
of the research unit History of Art
(full-time, 40 hours per week)


tenure track position, initially limited to 1 year, with evaluation and the prospect of a permanent position after 4 years.
Planned start of employment: January 1st, 2025


The Research Unit History of Art, based at the Institute for Habsburg and Balkan Studies, is currently the only art
historical research institution in Austria that deals comprehensively with the topic of Austrian cultural heritage in
general and architectural history in particular. The unit thus makes a significant contribution to the Austrian research
landscape. Furthermore, it is the only research unit that deals with representations of princely (Habsburg) and state
rule (both monarchical and republican) from an art historical perspective and with stained glass from the Middle Ages
to the early 20th century.


Your tasks:

• The academic and administrative management of the research unit History of Art

• To complement and strengthen the profile of the research unit History of Art as an established centre of excellence

for art history in Austria and to enrich it with your own research expertise with a focus on the history of art and
architecture in the modern era

• The willingness to connect with issues currently being pursued in the research unit History of Art and in the other

research units of the IHB

• To open up new research perspectives also with the other research units of the IHB, other research institutions of

the Oe AW, but also internationally

• Acquisition of third-party funds for the realisation of research projects

• Participation in the dissemination of knowledge to a wider public

• Representation of Austria at RIHA

• Responsibility for the research unit’s publication programme of the Veröffentlichungen zur Kunstgeschichte
  

Your profile:

• Ph D in art history

• Publication and research experience in European art history of the modern era. A geographical focus on the

countries associated with the House of Habsburg or the Republic of Austria in an international context is desirable,
as is a willingness to concentrate one's own research on Central Europe and/or on its connections with Western
and Eastern Europe. Ideas and concepts for the use of digital tools or for the realisation of digital projects are
expressly welcome.

• International networking with other art history research institutes

• Organisational and administrative experience in the scientific field

• Willingness and ability to utilise synergies, i.e. to further develop the existing scientific competences and research

fields at the research unit History of Art and at the IHB

We offer an annual gross salary of € 72.931,60 according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of
Sciences.
