The School Board Office is located in Nelson, B.C. Our schools are dispersed geographically and range in size and composition:
- 13 elementary schools
- 1 middle school
- 1 K-10 school
- 4 secondary schools
- 2 K-12 schools
- online learning and blended programs
- an extensive array of program options, including Aboriginal Education, Late French Immersion, Outdoor Programs, and a strong International Program.
The annual pay range for a full time teacher is $61,522 to $108,126, with placement on the range based on experience and qualifications in accordance with the collective agreement.
School District #8 (Kootenay Lake) has a vacancy for a dynamic and passionate educator at Mt. Sentinel Secondary School in South Slocan, BC. Mt. Sentinel is a Grade 7-12 school, with a current enrolment of 285 students.
We are looking for an innovative, creative and flexible teacher who can demonstrate an understanding of the renewed BC curriculum and School District #8’s student expectations. The awarded applicant will be experienced in teaching in a multi-aged setting, fluent in assessment strategies that support learning, universal design for learning, technology integration (including GAFE) and will strive to create an engaging, challenging, and supportive learning environment. The applicant will also have recent experience teaching Art 7-10 and integrated literacy skills at the middle years level. This position is also interdisciplinary in nature and will include an opportunity to work with our Middle Years teaching team. Position Description:
The awarded applicant will be assigned to one of our four middle years HUBS. The teacher will work collaboratively to co-design and co-teach learning sequences in a multi-aged, integrated classroom environment. This position holds Science and Social Studies curriculum integration for all four HUBS and will work to help lead and design integrated curricular projects. This teacher will also work to supporting language arts skill development across the curriculum in collaboration with their HUB partners.
Educational Qualifications:
- A valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch.
- Bachelor of Teacher Education with a focus or specialization in literacy and/or middle years teaching.
- Recent successful experience teaching all core academics at the middle school level in the past 5 years.
- Experience with a variety of learning management systems.
- Demonstrated ability to use a variety of teaching and assessment strategies.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and execute multi-aged, integrated learning sequences.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and classroom management skills.
Required Competencies and Experience:
1. Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively with students, whole school staff and parents to create a school
environment and culture that is focused on developing a sense of belonging and connection, in safe and welcoming
environment.
2. Plan, using backward design and differentiation strategies, for curriculum that meets the needs, interests and abilities
of a diverse range of learners.
3. Create a mutually respectful classroom culture that ensures student involvement and engagement in the learning
process and enables each student an opportunity to achieve learning outcomes through a variety of current
instructional and self-regulation strategies.
4. Collaborate with colleagues and the School Based Team, including the Inclusion Support Teacher, Aboriginal
Education Teacher, Education Assistants, and Counsellor to ensure that students with learning and behavioral
challenges are
supported through adaptations, modifications, and differentiation as required in their IEPs.
5. Willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues to implement proactive, research-based teaching practices that
support social emotional learning and mental health literacy in the classroom (for example, Trauma-Focused Schools
and Open Parachute)
6. Establish clear learning outcomes or key questions related to big ideas in curriculum and clearly communicate these
outcomes to students and parents following the new K-12 Reporting Policy.
7. Develop assessment and evaluation strategies that align with the changed emphases in curriculum and with the new
K-12 reporting policy framework.
8. Be conversant and have experience with current educational technologies and demonstrate a growth mindset for
learning new tools and applications.
9. Be cognizant of Indigenous worldviews and knowledge and establish positive, interdependent relationships with
colleagues, students, parents and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every student’s unique
abilities.
10. Demonstrated fluency in developing learning sequences that will provide meaningful and engaging experiences
relevant for intermediate/middle school aged learners.
