About the Faculty of Continuing Education & Extension

The Faculty of Continuing Education & Extension at Mount Royal University invites applications for a part-time instructor. Mount Royal University has provided continuing education to the Calgary community and beyond for more than 60 years. We offer more than 1,000 courses and 100 certificate and diploma programs and have more than 50,000 course registrations each year. Our courses cover a wide range of sectors, including but not limited to social services, business, and health. These courses are offered in a variety of formats on campus, online, in the workplace, and in the community.

The department is seeking a professional interested in contributing their expertise to teach in the following program:

Conflict Engagement
winter semester 2025 and ongoing
Course Description: Engage with others to explore and resolve topics or concerns within an interest-based philosophy. You will gain skills in preparing for important conversations, applying effective communication skills to balance people (relationships), processing (conversation balance, standards and BATNA), and problem resolution (agreements and outcomes).
Course Learning Outcomes:

• differentiate between interest-based negotiation and interest-focused negotiation.
  
• apply negotiation preparation tools, including the best alternative to a negotiated agreement (BATNA).
  
• explain the 4-stage training model for negotiation.
  
• identify tools for self-recognition of personal bias.
  
• analyze the various conflict specialist roles.

Teaching

ONLINE POSTING: This course will be online. The instructor will use the approved curriculum; implementation of applicable curriculum assessment measures; marking and submitting final course grades. The instructor will also be required to maintain regular contact with the administration team and adhere to program policies and deadlines. Students in this class are part of the Mediation and Conflict Resolution program.

Instruction:

• Lesson preparation
• Course delivery via online format including hosting a virtual Google Meet session with students once per week or at least twice during the course maintaining regular contact with students
• Marking/grading
• Facilitate course delivery using approved curriculum and learning materials
• An online instructor is required to access the course daily; however, there are no predetermined times of the day an instructor is required to be online. Online instructors must have reliable internet service throughout the entire period of the course.
• Reply to students within 24-48 hours.

Administration:

• Marking and submission of course grades
• Maintain regular contact with the program administrative team
• Participate in virtual instructor meetings and individual meetings with the program coordinator as required
• Participate in meetings and adhere to program policies and deadlines

Qualifications:

• Credential in a related field or minimum 3 years’ experience working in this field
• Working knowledge of copyright and APA citation
• Excellent communication skills
• Instructional experience in an adult education environment is an asset
• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Self-motivated and self-directed
• Proficiency with Google Workspace
• Proficiency with the D2L learning management system is an asset
