Working for the Department
Finance, Procurement, and Planning at the University of Alberta is responsible for financial reporting, resource planning, procurement, investments & treasury, and risk management & insurance. We also have a team of finance service partners who work closely with the faculties, units, and staff across the institution to provide excellent client service.
Position
The University of Alberta is seeking Financial Analysts to augment our team on a temporary basis. The Financial Analysts play a vital role in providing financial support to researchers across the University for Restricted Funds. This includes providing knowledge and support on operationalizing the model within their projects, providing advice, and reconciling department and/or faculty accounts.
Duties
- Assist research grant holders with post-award financial policies and procedures.
- Act as a resource to the grant holders to support funding-agency guidelines, UAPPOL policies and guidelines concerning research, trust-funded staffing, etc. to ensure applications are in accordance with applicable policies and guidelines.
- Monitor and provide financial oversight to grant holders including support of end-dates and advising Principal Investigators on how to request account extensions, over expenditures, and budget changes.
- Support and provide financial advice as required, reviewing accounts monthly via various tools (Financials -e Trac, Data Warehouse/Tableau, Peoplesoft).
- Collaborate with the Research Services Office, Staff Service Centre, Finance, Procurement and Planning, and the Faculty members to appropriately support research/trust accounts.
- Work with Shared Services to investigate and resolve discrepancies between account transactions and account balances.
- Analyze over-expended accounts and determine actions to resolve issues.
- Bring any unresolved or pertinent issues to the attention of the Senior Finance Partner.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial summaries.
- Assist in the compilation of financial information required for various reporting purposes for affiliated projects and department initiatives.
- Other financial duties and ad hoc research account reconciliations as required.
- An undergraduate degree in a related discipline. A post-secondary diploma with accounting and business coursework is considered an asset.
- Minimum of three years of progressive experience in an office setting with a finance/administration focus.
- Computer proficiency using Microsoft Office applications and Google Suite.
- Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills required.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy.
- Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize and manage workloads.
- Team player with a collaborative approach.
- Knowledge of Peoplesoft (Financial) applications and University of Alberta policies and procedures is considered an asset.
