Full-Time, 12-months temporary contract, effective September 2024.
Overview of the Position:
We are hiring a Contract Human Resources & Labour Relations Officer to join our team. Reporting to the Associate Director of Human Resources, this leadership position champions a positive work atmosphere through the supervision and evaluation of all aspects of Employee and Labour Relations matters. The HR & Labour Relations Officer is responsible for planning, directing, responding to and coordinating the labour relations and HR activities of the organization. Analyzes and interprets the application of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) including participating and handling employee complaints, internal investigations, mediation and employee grievance procedures. Advises senior management in the developing, applying and interpreting of labour relations policies and practices.

THE ROLE:
- Knowledge of labour/management principles, Canada Labour Code, Human Rights, Employment law Statutes and the Labour Relations Board process.
- Familiarity with provincial labour regulations, collective agreements and various labour organizations.
- Extensive knowledge in the collective bargaining process including conciliation, mediation and interest arbitration, collective agreement interpretation, dispute resolution mechanisms and union/management relationships.
- Leads labour relations matters including grievances, internal investigations and participates in collective bargaining.
- Utilizes other problem-solving processes such as mediation, where appropriate.
- Provides mentoring, coaching and training in labour relations and HR matters to employees, as assigned.
- Provides training and development in union/management relations to managers and supervisors.
- Assists VITA in achieving the organization’s 5-year strategic goals and KPIs.
- Provides advice and education on the disciplinary process, from coaching and counselling through to the termination of employment.
- Advises on legal compliance to minimize the risk of legal or third-party action related to requirements under government regulations such as the Occupational Health and Safety, Workers Safety and Insurance, Human Rights, Accessibility, and Employment Standards Acts.
- Assists in the recruitment for salaried staff, including interviews and preparation of offer letters and contracts of employment, when requested by the Associate Director of HR.
- Participates in MCCSS audits, providing reports and recommendations, as assigned.
- Complies with all organization’s policies and procedures.
- Completes all required mandatory training/education.
- Performs other related tasks as delegated by the Associate Director of HR.
- Degree or diploma in Labour Relations or related field or other relevant post-secondary education.
- Minimum 5 years of progressive Labour Relations experience, negotiating collective agreements and experience working with unions in a non-profit environment.
- Minimum 3 years management experience.
- Excellent time management skills, to work under minimal supervision, and to meet tight deadlines with demonstrated ability to prioritize and organize one’s own work.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain co-operative and constructive working relationships with employer representatives, staff colleagues, and with other individuals at all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise tact and diplomacy while maintaining strict confidentiality, and to work effectively in a consultative and collaborative environment.
- Driver’s license and own vehicle required.
- Member of HRPA, and CHRP designation
- Experience working in healthcare or development disability sector an asset

80 hours biweekly (hybrid model)
Rate of Pay: Salary $80,000 – $88,000
Job Location: VITA Head Office, 4301 Weston Road, North York, Ontario
