Junior Data Engineer, Libin Cardiovascular Institute

Description
The Libin Cardiovascular Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Junior Data Engineer. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Libin Precision Medicine Initiative (LPMI) is a flagship program of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute. LPMI is dedicated to supporting the membership of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute and advancing the field of precision medicine for cardiac research and care. The nature of the team and position require creative problem-solving, and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and navigate competing priorities. The position requires initiative, desire to learn, and the ability to work with a diversity of stakeholders at multiple institutions and in both clinical and research environments.
Based at the Foothills Campus, the LPMI team includes cardiac, data, research, and program professionals who work collaboratively across the Libin Cardiovascular Institute, University of Calgary, Alberta Health Services, and external partners to deliver an innovative data access, pipeline, management, and delivery system to accelerate research innovation.
This position reports to the Associate Director, LPMI with supervision and delegation by the Sr Data Engineer.
The Jr Data Engineer will provide ongoing support of an innovative cardiac data management pipeline for cardiac research. This process supports the transfer of data from the clinical to the research environment via an efficient data extraction, transformation, and load (ETL) process that facilitates large scare clinical research.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Assist in implementing and maintaining Python-based data processing pipelines
- Contribute to the development of data extraction, transformation, and load (ETL) code
- Help optimize existing code for improved performance and scalability
- Participate in code reviews and testing procedures
- Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot and resolve issues
- Assist in documentation and maintaining clear, well-commented code
- Support the migration of processes from Pandas to Polars for improved performance
- Assist in troubleshooting and debugging issues within existing codebases
- Assist the Data Analyst, Quality and Transformation, in tasks associated with the creation, quality review, and transfer of curated data packages for research
- Other duties as required
- Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
- 1-2 years of experience with Python programming required
- Familiarity with data processing libraries such as Pandas or Polars
- Basic understanding of database concepts and experience with SQL
- Experience with version control systems (preferably Git)
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Must be open to learning and development and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
- Strong communication and time management skills
- Must be able to exercise sound judgment and escalate issues to senior members of the team as appropriate

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with AWS services, particularly Lambda, S3, and Redshift data warehouses
- Experience deploying software applications using cloud-based Docker containers
- Basic understanding of healthcare data or medical terminologies
- Experience with cloud services, APIs, and web-based data sharing platforms
- Knowledge of best practices in data security and governance
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing workloads and priorities
