What role you will play in our team
Are you passionate about safety and eager to make a real impact in the oil and gas industry? Join our Kearl Operations Integrity team as a Safety Intern, where you will contribute fresh ideas and learn alongside experienced professionals. This role offers a unique opportunity to enhance safety culture, build positive relationships, and work within a strong team environment. You'll gain hands-on experience in safety performance and leadership, with regular trips to the Kearl field location. This Calgary-based position operates Monday to Friday, offering a dynamic and rewarding experience in a leading industry
Reporting to the Kearl Safety Supervisor, the Safety Intern contributes to effective safety performance by providing safety support to the Safety Team and leadership with the goal of achieving Imperial’s vision of industry leading safety performance and eliminating life-altering injuries.
What you will do

Master the Art of Safety Verification - Dive into the world of safety by attesting, validating, and verifying the application of essential safety tools. You'll work with our Safety Management System, Work Management, and Operations Integrity Management System (OIMS) standards. This includes hands-on experience with work permits, job safety analysis, and last-minute risk assessments (LMRA). - Be a Safety Mentor - Become a safety coach and mentor! You'll have the opportunity to provide training to workers, front-line supervisors, and second-line supervisors. Share knowledge on Personnel Safety Management System (PSMS) principles and tools, and watch your mentees thrive.
- Innovate with Human Performance Concepts - Get creative by developing content that enhances field knowledge of Human Performance concepts. Your work will support the effective execution and sustainment of the PSMS, making a real impact on safety performance.
- Champion Mental Health and Wellness - Play a vital role in supporting the implementation of the Kearl Mental Health and Wellness Strategy. Contribute to health and wellness efforts that promote a positive work environment and improve overall well-being.
- Drive Safety Initiatives - Collaborate with the Operations Integrity (OI) team to develop specific safety initiatives and projects. Your innovative ideas will help shape the future of safety practices.
- Strategize for Safety Success - Provide SSHE (Safety, Security, Health, and Environment) support in strategically implementing Kearl’s Safety Team key focus areas and tactics.
- Embrace Diverse Opportunities - Be ready to take on other exciting tasks as required. This is your chance to explore various aspects of safety and broaden your skill set.

About you
Skills and Qualifications
- Current enrollment in an OH&S related post-secondary program: You must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary program related to Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S).
- Understanding of Safety Principles: A basic understanding of personnel safety and safety management systems is required. Familiarity with Human Performance concepts is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Leadership skills: Demonstrated leadership skills are important. You should be able to act as a positive role model by showcasing your knowledge and fostering a collaborative environment through effective interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with Relevant Work: Having a general understanding of the type of work you will be supporting is preferred. This will help you integrate more effectively into the team.
- Communication Skills: Strong communication skills, including writing and public speaking, are essential. You should be able to convey information clearly and confidently to various audiences.
- Comfortable using a variety of technologies including Microsoft suite (word, excel, etc.), Generative AI – such as Co Pilot, and Share Point.
Preferred Qualifications/ Experience
- Ability to interact at all levels of the organization and across the businesses
- The ability to develop and conduct presentations for a variety of audiences
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record
- High level of analytical ability and strategic thinking required to gather and evaluate complex information obtained from a variety of sources and to formulate recommendations
- Managing numerous priorities simultaneously with tight and conflicting deadlines
