Position Summary: The Manager, International Trade and Skills Policy works within a team of government relations, communications and policy experts to serve as CME’s lead on all matters relating to international trade, skills, and immigration policy. The role requires a proactive individual with the ability to identify and research priority trade and skills issues, work closely with members to develop substantive policy positions, advocate directly to the federal government, and collaborate with industry partners to advance member interests.
Key responsibilities include overseeing CME’s response to all federal policies and programs that impact the manufacturing related to Canada’s international trade agreements, trade facilitation, labour and skills shortages, and immigration programs. That includes leading CME’s work to inform federal trade agreements, such as the upcoming renewal of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) agreement and addressing the current and future skills and labour shortages facing Canada’s manufacturing industry.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Identify, monitor, analyze and develop responses to federal policies related to international trade, skills and immigration policy
- Build and maintain strong relationships with relevant government officials and their staff
- Develop and execute federal advocacy strategies on key issues
- Build and leverage networks of industry experts, stakeholders and international partners to advance shared policy objectives
- Provide political and policy insights to support deliverables such as member briefings, memos, presentations and communications products
- Support the growth of CME membership and member services; and
- Other duties as required
- Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in related field.
- Minimum 2-4 years of relevant experience in government relations and advocacy, politics, policy development, communications and related disciplines
- Knowledge and curiosity about the issues and trends impacting the manufacturing sector and passionate about advocating for policy solutions that benefit government, industry, workers, and the public
- Strong understanding of government policy development processes
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Ability to work in a dynamic and flexible environment by being self-motivating and comfortable managing projects independently or as part of a team
- Meet the criteria to become a registered lobbyist of the federal government
- Experience working with an industry trade association considered an asset
- Experience working with the manufacturing sector considered an asset
- Bilingualism (English, French) is an asset.
Pay: $80,000.00-$95,000.00 per year
