PURPOSE OF THE JOB



The Manufacturing Leadership Program is a 2-year development program designed to train as a manufacturing engineer within a production facility (The Toronto Plant located in Scarborough). Within the 2 years, the program participant will serve as a manufacturing engineer for both of our two production lines. Additional development opportunities will be given to lead cross functional projects in both the maintenance and operations within the 2 years of the program. After the 2 years program most applicants will graduate into a full manufacturing engineer within one of the openings in the Toronto plant, but this is not guaranteed. Special considerations will be given to those candidates who are open and willing to travel to another plant within Canada or the US for openings in other facilities.



The Manufacturing Engineer (ME) is accountable to maintain production efficiencies by collaborating closely with the maintenance and operations department. The ME is responsible for ensuring the quality of the products produced at the lowest possible manufactured cost. The ME will lead any initiatives aimed to improve quality and or efficiencies. The ME will also be responsible for leading any training, coaching and upskilling of operators to help improve the performance of the facility. While completing the requirements of the role, the ME must keep process, equipment and people safety as the number one priority at all times.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The Manufacturing Engineer will have responsibility for:
  • Ensuring a safe, clean and environmentally compliant work environment and building a culture where safety is a first priority
  • Ensuring that all control plans, work instructions, and other procedures related to the technical operation of the production lines ensure the safety of employees
  • Developing risk assessments for critical tasks in cluding HAZOP, FMEA and other risk management tools


Knowing Our Customers

The Manufacturing Engineer will have responsibility for:
  • Identifying, understanding, and teaching others the Critical Product Characteristics required to provide our customers with a quality product
  • Developing and implementing procedures, work instructions and systems to ensure products consistently meet or exceed customer expectations. Ensuring procedures and work instructions are up-to-date.
  • Supporting experiments or trials for new and existing products to ensure they meet our customer’s fitness for use


Process Performance

The Manufacturing Engineer will have responsibility for:
  • Conducting process audits to review Critical Product Characteristics and Critical Process Variables and implementing sustainable corrective actions for process shifts or upsets
  • Determining process consistency and capability (Cpk)
  • Implementing control charting schemes for Critical Process Variables based on ISBMS and S&T specifications
  • Developing and implementing Operator Control Plans to ensure that all products meet specifications at the lowest cost
  • Identifying and eliminating common causes of product and process variation (troubleshooting)
  • Analyzing product and process data, providing feedback and making recommendations to optimize performance
  • Identifying and implementing process improvements and best practices. Improvements may originate from S&T, ISBMS, or other facilities
  • Implementing corrective actions for issues surfaced through quality complaints and hold tags
  • Coaching, counseling, and training all employees on process control
  • Establishing processes for all critical tasks and audit for adherence and compliance
  • Partner with maintenance to resolve equipment issues
  • Identifying and requesting capital funding for equipment, modifications, etc., Providing support to drive successful implementation of capital projects as required.


Leading and Developing Talent

The Manufacturing Engineer will have responsibility for:
  • Educating primary employees in the manufacturing process and process control procedures
  • Partnering with employees to develop and implement Operator Control Plans
  • Partnering with Maintenance to develop and implement Operator Based Care plans for equipment to ensure employee understanding and ownership
  • Responsible for developing technical curriculum for operators training.
  • Partnering with Operations to test operators competency.
  • Ability to train and test developing engineering talent.



JOB REQUIREMENTS


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
:

  • Bachelors degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above


EXPERIENCE
:

  • Beneficial to have manufacturing experience within a co-op or internship program
  • Completion of an engineering related Development Program or similar experience preferred


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
:

  • Understands customer needs, product specifications, basic cost drivers and the Critical Process Variables (CPVs) that impact these elements
  • Help execute the systems within TPM (Tagging, 5S, CIL, HTA/ SOC removal)
  • Leads RCA’s and implementation of countermeasures to address issues within the facility.
  • Understands statistical concepts including trial design, data analysis, control charts, process capability and design of experiments to drive process improvements
  • Understands basic elements of producing fiberglass including raw materials, processes and control systems
  • Ability to communicate with and engage employees at all levels of the organization
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities or projects at one time
  • Lean Certification or evidence of Lean Manufacturing experience
