The Research Office is responsible for advancing the research enterprise of the University of Winnipeg by obtaining, allocating, and administrating research grants, negotiating research contracts, and ensuring compliance to national and international standards in human and animal ethics certification.
The Program Officer, Social Sciences, Humanities, and EDI is a full-time continuing position within The Research Office. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting researchers through all steps in applying for external grants to SSHRC and other social sciences/humanities based research opportunities. The incumbent will also provide operational and strategic leadership to promote a culture of equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and decolonization (EDI/AR/D) as it relates to research development, engagement and output.
Responsibilities:
  • Manages SSHRC and social sciences/humanities grant processes.
  • Reviews grant applications and provides advice in advance of submission.
  • Maintains contact with other program officers to ensure awareness of current funding opportunities, quota, and changes to policies, adherence to agency guidelines and regulations.
  • Supports research-related committees.
  • Creates and analyses research related grant statistics, along with a five-year trend, to assist with writing reports.
  • Provides personalized research advice to faculty, including answering questions from applicants about processes and guidelines.
  • Conducts critical reviews of project descriptions, budgets and supporting documents and offers constructive, technical and substantive feedback.
  • Writes support letters for faculty and students applying to external agencies may negotiate on institutional cash support for the research program.
  • Writes institutional support sections for grant applications.
  • Meets with new and existing faculty members to provide individual advice on their research program and funding opportunities.
  • Interprets and implements research-related policies, procedures and regulations on day-to-day research related questions and issues.
  • Coordinates and delivers workshops.
  • Maintains internal database of research opportunities and performs electronic investigations in online research databases.
  • Communicates funding sources and opportunities to faculty via individual emails, the Research Reader, and other university list-serves.
  • Provides expertise, advice and training on fully realizing EDI/AR/D goals as it relates to research engagement.
  • Lead the research, development, coordination and communication of policies and practices for advancing EDI/AR/D in research throughout the university.
  • Manage and ensure the university’s response to EDI/A/D is in line with the expectations of external research funding bodies.
  • Monitor, advance and report on the universities EDI/AR/D research metrics.
  • Provide individual and specialized advice to develop research programs that embed and support EDI principles.
  • Maintaining, gathering, developing, and organizing resources for researchers to be accessed through the institutional EDI hub.
  • Liaising with the Human Rights and Diversity Office and its staff, and with the Director of Academic Programming and EDI in the VP Academic’s Office.
  • Liaise with other EDI/AR/D research administrators in Canada to support the building of a community of practice.
  • Support UHREB around ethics applications pertaining to research with equity deserving groups.
  • Facilitates and develops professional development opportunities for the UHREB on guidelines and requirements for research.
  • Ensures other Research Office program officers are aware of current ethical procedures pertaining to equity groups and that the University is adhering to guidelines and regulations.
  • Support faculty researchers with research involving Indigenous communities in designing appropriate research methodology, engagement, analysis, dissemination strategies, ethical considerations and research data management.
  • Communicates Indigenous research opportunities to the campus community.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree preferably within the social sciences/humanities field
  • Minimum 4 years of related experience.
  • Experience working in post-secondary environment an asset.
  • Experience in research grant writing and grant reviewing.
  • Experience in reviewing policy and programs.
  • Experience in large-scale research project management in the context of community engagement and collaboration.
  • Experience in organizing, managing and facilitating academic workshops and events.
  • Experience in drafting and maintaining multiple budgets accurately.
  • In-depth knowledge of best practices for reviewing and writing EDI/AR/D action plans as part of grant proposals, and of Canadian peer-review granting systems, processes and procedures related to EDI/AR/D.
  • In-depth understanding of complex issues related to EDI/AR/D as they relate to the researcher, faculty and student experience and research impact.
  • Ability to conduct difficult conversations with diplomacy and tact while advancing research from an EDI/AR/D lens.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to plan, prioritize competing demands, and work independently with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to show initiative and work independently with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to make independent judgements within area and University policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various levels of internal and external contacts as they relate to the program/function.
  • Demonstrated computer and website maintenance skills.
  • Knowledge of the principals of research design and grant application procedures, as well as knowledge or mobilization processes.
  • Ability to collect and synthesize relevant resources.
  • Ability to be flexible and work as part of a team and within the University overall.
  • Evidence of being tactful and demonstrating the ability to work with faculty members and community partners.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The salary range for this position will be from $58,513.00 to $81,117.40 annually.
Note: The work described in this posting will be conducted primarily in-person, with an opportunity to apply for Remote Work for up to two (2) days per week after successfully completing a probationary period.
