Position Overview:
Resumes are being accepted for the temporary position of Recreation Coordinator, General Programs with the Culture and Recreation Department. Reporting to the Supervisor, Programing and Camps, this position is responsible for the development and implementation of general interest recreation programs and services. Guided by the goals and objectives of the City of Guelph Corporate Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, service, inclusion, wellness and learning, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Community Vision for an inclusive, connected, prosperous city.

Key duties and responsibilities
  • Assess community needs and requirements for programs and services, including demographic analysis of population changes and projected growth in Guelph, to ensure the availability of recreation programs that are viable in the community and responsive to community needs.
  • Develop, deliver, and evaluate recreation programs and services that focus on community needs, including programs for preschool, children, youth, adults, seniors, and summer camps.
  • Prepare and monitor program operating budgets; provide input and expert advice on operating budgets related to Recreation Services.
  • Assess equipment/program supply needs and initiate purchasing processes.
  • Maintain a current and thorough knowledge of all trends and best practices as they relate to recreation programming.
  • Assist with the recruitment, training, coaching and the evaluation of staff, develop goals and objectives and support annual performance appraisals.
  • Liaise and work collaboratively with community groups, outside agencies, organizations and other City staff to deliver programs and services and attend meetings as required.
  • Seek and develop funding proposals that support the work plan of Recreation Services.
  • Prepare and assemble seasonal program brochure data and other marketing initiatives for recreation programs and special events.
  • Respond to emergencies, inquiries and complaints and ensures a positive relationship between the public and outside agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, City of Guelph policies and established industry guidelines.
  • Assists in the implementation of the registration system and process.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications and requirements
  • Experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion of a College Diploma and/or University Degree in Recreation or a related field and 2-3 years’ experience coordinating recreation and community development initiatives. Candidates with an equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • A valid “G” driver’s licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their licence is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
  • Excellent customer service skills with sound judgment and decision making skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in delivering programs through a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion lens.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders to create meaningful, relevant, and inclusive program offerings.
  • Knowledge and experience in fitness program development, coordination, and delivery would be an asset.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to provide effective work direction, training, guidance and support to staff.
  • Skills in program evaluation, improvement, and enhancement.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, stakeholders, and the general public.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office (Word and Excel).
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and other applicable regulations.
  • Experience with XPlor, JDE and WAM would be an asset.
  • Self-directed to identify community recreation needs.
  • A high degree of thoughtfulness & diplomacy to work effectively with committees & diverse communities.
  • Team player with the ability to work well with part-time city staff and Community Partners.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid CPR/AED/First Aid certificate.
  • A satisfactory police record/vulnerable sector check will be required at the time of job offer.

Hours of work
35 hours per week; 7 hours per day. Occasional evening and weekend shifts will be required.

Pay/Salary
CUPE 973 Grade 8: $33.19 - $40.76 per hour
