Respiratory Lab Technician

What will you be doing!
- Performing routine and periodic maintenance, repairing and inspecting respiratory protection and related components, under well-defined procedures.
- Producing and maintaining maintenance records and reports in accordance with quality assurance standards.
- Interacting with customers to produce results appropriate to their specific needs.
- Scheduling and conducting respirator fit testing using a variety of models and types of respirator configurations.
- Instructing employees on the proper use of respiratory protection.
- Performing daily quality control checks to ensure fit test equipment is operating properly and maintaining performance records of these tests.
- Performing surveillance and restocking tasks at respirator storage locations around the CRL site.
- Evaluating and testing new respirator configurations with guidance from the appropriate subject matter experts.
- Maintaining laboratory equipment and performing troubleshooting as required.
- Interacting daily with team members, internal clients and service providers.
- Working collaboratively in a group to coordinate tasks or complete a project.
- Communicating with external vendors or service providers to gain information, order parts and supplies, or coordinate work.
- Participating in audits as they relate to the labs.
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.

Education
- Graduation from a post-secondary institution, preferably in a field relating to occupational health and safety or industrial hygiene, and normally has six to eight years of pertinent technological experience. Alternatively, graduation from secondary school with a minimum of ten years of pertinent experience or, the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training.

Experience
- Experience in the care, maintenance and assembly of air purifying and/or supplied air respirators; and/or the fit testing of respirator protection, is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Good judgment and communication skills (oral and written).
- Ability to work independently conducting various tasks using a variety of instruments and techniques.
- Ability to work as an effective team member with administrative, professional and technical staff.
- Ability to respond to challenging schedule demands in a fast-paced environment.
- Must maintain confidentiality, as this position involves confidential personnel information.
- Attention to detail, accurate and legible data recording is essential.
- Demonstrated understanding and appreciation of safety culture.
- Working knowledge at the intermediate level or better of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook is required.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of respiratory protection, and experience with the use of respirators, including ability to identify faults, make minor repairs and manage the process for major repairs.
- Knowledge of the concepts and requirements of a Quality Assurance program and Quality Control, particularly related to instrumentation.
- Ability to determine creative solutions to new problems that have not previously been addressed, in their area of responsibility.
- Demonstrated ability to be a “self-starter”, independently motivated, and capable of scheduling their own workload appropriately on a prioritization basis.

Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
- The requirement to be able to wear respiratory equipment and other PPE&C (e.g gloves, safety glasses).
- Visual concentration is required for maintenance and testing operations, creating and reviewing reports, certificates, procedures, analyzing information, etc.
- It is required to audibly hear indicators such as alarms, SCBA ring-downs, air leaks, etc.
- Standing or sitting for extended periods of time is required.
- Regular requirement to carry instrumentation to and from work areas (< 23 kg daily).
- Most work is performed in an office/laboratory setting, with routine monthly scheduled field work.
- Work with chemicals and compressed gas.
- The Respirator lab work environment is a high volume, high paced environment, with spontaneous demands.
