Archaeological sites are an irreplaceable part of history in British Columbia, Canada (B.C.) and are critically important to Indigenous communities. There are over 62,000 known archaeological sites in B.C., 90 per cent of which are of Indigenous origin. Indigenous Peoples have an ongoing connection to this history. Many archaeological sites in B.C. are culturally sensitive, contain ancestral remains, and have important sacred and spiritual value to Indigenous Peoples in B.C.

Job Description

AECOM
is seeking an energetic, passionate, self-motivated Senior Archaeologist and Indigenous Relations Specialist(s) to join our team in BC. One or more roles may be filled from this recruitment process.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading, planning and running archaeological field programs, including consultation with Indigenous communities with respect to archaeological projects located on Treaty Lands, Traditional Territories, Reserve Lands, Crown Lands, or privately owned lands
  • Leading the growth of our archaeological portfolios through the development of project proposals and other business development activities
  • Writing technical archaeological assessment reports
  • Assisting with the management of project budgets and schedules, internal and external document control, and project records
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of archaeological programs and services
  • Consulting with Indigenous Peoples and communities in B.C. on archaeology projects, including, but not limited to, developing consultation plans, identifying potential adverse effects of archaeology projects on Indigenous’ interests, and identifying mitigation and accommodation measures
  • Working with multi-disciplinary teams and project managers to develop archaeological and Indigenous consultation strategies supporting environmental assessments, community engagement plans, and infrastructure development projects
  • Leading, planning and participating in Indigenous relations engagement activities, including site tours / visits, advisory committees, community meetings, and public open houses
  • Managing relationships with clients and Indigenous communities

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or technical diploma in archaeology
  • 6 years of relevant experience
  • Must be able to hold a permit to complete archaeological assessments in one or more B.C. Culture Areas
  • Experience with Indigenous consultation and engagement in B.C.
  • Must possess a valid class 5 driver’s licence
Preferred Qualifications
  • 8 + years of relevant experience
  • Existing relationships with Indigenous communities in B.C. with an understanding of regional and community characteristics
  • Acknowledge of the unique historical, contemporary, cultural, and traditional characteristics of Indigenous communities in B.C. including of the socio-economic relationships they have with the land and their unique knowledge of the natural environment.
  • Experience working on large infrastructure projects in B.C.; existing relationships with entities such as B.C. Hydro, Tran BC, Trans Link, BCTransit, and others are a strong advantage
  • Experience coordinating with socio-economic, land resource use studies and Indigenous Knowledge studies
  • Experience in business and client development to win archaeological projects
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and remotely if required
