Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for the permanent, full-time position of Supervisor, Ferry Operations with the Ferry Operations Division of Halifax Transit.

Under the general direction of the Manager, Ferry Operations, the Supervisor, Ferry Operations is responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the vessels, and the supervision and scheduling of all Masters, Mates and Engineers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Supervisor, Ferry Operations shall:
  • Supervise the daily operation of the ferry service, ensuring efficient and effective service in accordance with the published schedule; adjust as directed to accommodate the requirements of festivals and special events; monitor the collection of ridership data.
  • Supervise ferry crews in their duties in accordance with the Ferry Operations Manual.
  • Supervise the creation of the shift and vacation schedule for crew members and shore engineers.
  • Supervise the administration and submission of payroll information.
  • Assist the Manager, Transit Operations in the creation and implementation of a planned maintenance program for ferries, pontoon structures, and safety/life saving equipment.
  • Supervise the Shore Engineer in corrective maintenance activities for machinery and equipment, and in the maintenance of a spare parts inventory.
  • Assist in the preparation of capital and operating budgets.
  • Work with the Supervisor, Marine Safety, Security and Training to organize and schedule training; monitor to ensure completion of all proficiency serials in accordance with the Ferry Training Manual.
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection of new employees.
  • Monitor the performance of all subordinates, conduct performance reviews and administer discipline as required. Accept and consider complaints and grievances, mediate to a satisfactory resolution when possible and forward to the Manager, Transit Operations when not.
  • Promote a safe work environment and good management/labour relations. Supervise the application of wellness initiatives.
  • Will act as the Ferry Facilities Security Officer as an Alternate for the designate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager, Transit Operations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Completion of Grade XII or equivalent.
  • Experience and expertise with Voith-Schneider propulsion an asset.
  • Minimum (5) five years’ experience in a marine operation.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to organize and assign work.
  • A minimum of two (2) years in a leadership role, preferably in a unionized environment.
Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Transport Canada Master, Near Coastal, or higher.
  • Current Marine Medical.
  • Full M.E.D. Certificate (A2, B1, B2, C, D) or equivalent.
  • Valid First Aid.
  • Restricted Operator Certificate.
  • Current Confined Space Entry Certificate.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of information-based technology and software including Microsoft Suite.
  • Ferry Facilities Security Officer designation or equivalent, considered an asset.

WORK STATUS: Permanent, full-time.

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check including (but not limited to): Criminal Record Check (CRC).

HOURS OF WORK: Tuesday to Saturday from 2pm to 10pm, 35 hours per week. Possible shift adjustments of short notice in response to operational requirements may be required. On standby during regular ferry operation hours of 6:00 am to 12:00 am.

SALARY: MT1, Non-Union, $78,235-$92,041

WORK LOCATION: Halifax Transit Ferries: Alderney, Halifax and Woodside Ferry Terminals - Based on operational requirements the work location and schedules are subject to change.
