About the role

We’re looking for a QNS&L yard supervisor to lead a team working in the QNS&L yard.

Working on a 7 days on / 7 days off roster and reporting to the Operations Superintendent you will:
  • Maintain and foster good relationships between your team members
  • Coordinate all activities to minimize operational delays and disruptions
  • Carry out yard and main-track audits to ensure locomotive engineers are operating trains safely and efficiently
  • Work closely with other departments to meet objectives
  • Ensure that employees follow the training program and evaluate their performance
  • Ensure that there are always enough workers to do the work in accordance with the collective agreement
  • Manage emergency repairs and monitor locomotives and auxiliary equipment
  • Follow Transport Canada and QNS&L Railway standards and regulations and all IOC Health, Safety and Environmental procedures, regulations and standards

What you’ll bring
  • A commitment to your own safety and that of your team
  • A high school diploma or successful completion of an equivalency exam (TENS)
  • Good knowledge of IOC/QNS&L operating standards and procedures and Transport Canada regulations
  • Experience as a train driver or operations manager
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken; Rio Tinto is a global company, and the duties of this position require daily collaboration with colleagues, teams and partners based outside Quebec
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software
  • Valid class-5 driving licence
Desirable:
  • Bachelor’s Degree or College diploma in a related field
  • Experience managing railway operations or maintenance activities, knowledge of railway regulations or experience managing workers
  • Knowledge of French
Note: Successful candidates must pass the Canadian Rail Operating Rules exams (Level A) and maintain their certification. They must also meet the position’s physical requirements.

We are a leading North American producer and exporter of premium iron ore pellets and high-grade concentrate with average iron grades greater than 66%. IOC’s operations include a mine with five operational pits, a concentrator and a pelletizing plant located near Labrador City in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. We also operate a wholly-owned 418 km railway, the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway (QNS&L), that links our Labrador operations to Company-owned port facilities in Sept-Iles.
