Assistant Professor in Smart Battery Technology with AI

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, AAU Energy, a position as Assistant Professor in Smart Battery Technology with AI is open for appointment from 1 March 2025 to 31 August 2027, or soon hereafter.

AAU Energy is a dynamic engineering research department in continuous growth and inspiring surroundings. AAU Energy has a very international environment and covers all areas of clean and sustainable energy systems of the future within electrical, thermal and mechatronic energy technology. AAU Energy has campuses in both Aalborg and Esbjerg, this position is in Aalborg.

The mission is to be world leading in both research and research-based education of the energy engineers of the future. AAU Energy has approx. 300 employees of many nationalities, of which 25 are administrative staff. In addition, AAU Energy constantly has approx. 50-70 guest researchers from around the world.

Research and teaching are in the absolute world elite in the field of energy, and we have extensive and leading workshop and laboratory facilities, where research and innovation are carried out in direct collaboration with industry to a great extent.

The position is offered in relation to the research program"Smart Battery" and the Assistant Professor will be positioned to the section for“Power Electronics System Integration and Materials”.

Research areas will be within Digital Transformation and AI, as well as Electrification and Energy Integration. Teaching will primarily be in Energy Technology, Smart Battery System, and AI in Battery Management, but also in other study programs at the University.

The applicant should possess a Master’s degree in electrical engineering and a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field such as Energy Technology with a focus on machine learning applications in Lithium-ion batteries.

The ideal candidate should have specialized knowledge in Lithium-ion battery management, preferably with a strong research background including the following areas:

1. Lithium-ion battery modeling
2. Battery diagnostics and prognostics(state estimation, health assessment, lifetime prediction)
3. Advanced battery management techniques(thermal modeling, pulse charging strategies, balancing)
4. Feature engineering, machine learning, and AI application in battery system.
5. Smart battery technology and digital twin.

They should have a proven track record of conducting high-quality research, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, invited talks and conference tutorials, and participation in successful research projects.

Leadership skills are essential, with the candidate showing potential for leading research initiatives and contributing to collaborative projects. A history of successful collaboration with other researchers and industry partners is crucial.

Additionally, the applicant should demonstrate a strong commitment to research-based teaching at Master and Ph D level in Energy Technology. Research-based teaching involves lecturing and supervision of students as well as contributing to coordination of development of courses within these study groups. It is an advantage but not a prerequisite that applicants have experience with Problem Based Learning(PBL), which is the teaching philosophy of Aalborg University. The position involves participating in Aalborg University’s program for university pedagogy.

Qualification requirements:

Appointment as an Assistant Professor presupposes scientific qualifications at Ph D–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment.

Appointment as an Assistant Professor cannot exceed a period of four years in total in a temporary position(appointment at Assistant Professor level cannot exceed a period of eight years in total in Denmark).

  • Publications you wish to be considered by the assessment committee. You may attach up to 5 publications.
  • A specification of your teaching qualifications relative to the teaching portfolio. If this is not enclosed you must include an explanation for its absence.
