Associate Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience and Computational Psychiatry

Aarhus

FULL TIME

September 25, 2024

The Department of Clinical Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a full-time position as Associate Professor in the field of Cognitive Neuroscience and Computational Psychiatry as per 1 March 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Clinical Medicine is one of the largest health science research departments in Denmark. Our clinical research covers all the medical specialties and takes place in close collaboration with Aarhus University Hospital and the regional hospitals in Central Denmark Region. We have approx. 30,000 square meters of modern research facilities for experimental surgery and medicine, animal facilities and advanced scanners at our disposal. The department has overall responsibility for the degree programs in medicine and in molecular medicine. We are around 670 academic employees, 500 Ph D students and 160 technical or administrative employees who are cooperating across disciplines. As Associate Professor at the department, you will also be working at Aarhus University Hospital. About the position
The position is aimed at expanding and strengthening our expertise within cognitive neuroscience and computational psychiatry. We are particularly interested in candidates who seek to leverage research opportunities in clinical settings to study human cognition and behaviour and how these processes may be altered in neuropsychiatric diseases. One area of particular focus for this position is building a research programme around direct recordings from the human brain in neurosurgical patients, such as movement disorder patients undergoing the implantation of DBS electrodes. Of special interest in this connection is using the electrophysiological recordings already made clinically for research purposes and completing these recordings with recently developed electrochemical methods for measuring fast neuromodulator release. Your job responsibilities
As Associate Professor, you will contribute to the department’s research and teaching environment and to the faculty’s overall research strategy. You will contribute to the development of the department individually and in collaboration with others via your research of high international quality. You ensure that your teaching maintains a high academic and didactic standard. You possess professional collaborative skills and a broad academic network which you are able to bring into play in your contribution to the academic development of Aarhus University and its profile both nationally and internationally.

Your main tasks will consist of:
  • Research of high international quality, including publishing your research in top international journals and communicating your research at national and international conferences
  • Applying for and helping secure external research funding
  • Teaching and supervision of bachelor’s and master’s degree students and contributing to the development of new teaching activities
  • Supervision of Ph D students and contributing to the development of the faculty's Ph D courses.
  • Involvement in assessment and committee work at Aarhus University
  • Public dissemination of your research

You will report to Clinical Professor Leif Østergaard, Center of Functionally Integrative Neuroscience, CFIN. Your profile
You are established as a prominent researcher within the field of cognitive neuroscience and computational psychiatry; have made high-impact contributions to our understanding of human cognition and behaviour; and have a track record of high-impact research using direct recordings from neurosurgical patients, ideally electrochemical methods for measuring fast neuromodulator release. The assessment of qualifications is based on research output, including high-impact peer-reviewed publications; long-term research stays at internationally recognized research institutions; proven ability to attract external funding; international research collaborations; as well as teaching and/or supervision, including master’s and Ph D students.

You should possess excellent communication skills and be able to build relationships based on trust with students, colleagues and other partners. You should be ready to take co-responsibility for the development of the department's research and education at the highest international level and for ensuring that we maintain a good work environment. You should naturally involve yourself in interdisciplinary collaboration at the departmental, faculty and university level as well as nationally and internationally. We expect you to be fluent in spoken and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish; Aarhus University arranges Danish teaching.

In order to be assessed as qualified for an Associate Professor position, you must meet these academic criteria.

Shortlisting will be used. Questions about the position
If you have any questions about the position, please contact Clinical Professor Leif Østergaard, Center of Functionally Integrative Neuroscience, CFIN, Email leif@cfin.au.dk.

Your place of work will be the Center of Functionally Integrative Neuroscience at (CFIN South) Aarhus University, Universitetsbyen 3, DK-8000 Aarhus C and (CFIN North) Aarhus University Hospital, Palle Juul-Jensens Boulevard 99, Entrance J, DK-8200 Aarhus N.

We expect to conduct interviews in January 2025.
