Famly
Full-stack Engineer
Copenhagen
FULL TIME
September 18, 2024
We’re looking for someone with at least 3 years of experience in full-stack web development, who's excited to work in a fast paced environment and make real impact with their work on a daily basis. This role is on-site at our HQ in Copenhagen, Denmark - with a flexible work from home policy when needed.
At Famly, we’re building the world's fastest, most intuitive, and collaborative Early Childhood Platform for all the grown-ups in a young child's life to connect and share their workload - so that they can focus on the early interactions that matter. Famly’s all-in-one software includes a full business administration suite for nursery managers, child development and learning tools for educators, as well as a platform for better communication and collaboration between home and nursery. By equipping the key adults with the right tools, support and knowledge, we’re on a mission to give every child a better start in life. With around 150 employees across offices in Copenhagen, London, Berlin and DC, Famly already touches the lives of almost 600,000 children worldwide.
Famly’s valued behaviours are selfless, inclusive, passionate, courageous, proactive, striving, and effective. They’re not just words on a company culture doc that no one ever reads - they’re present in every single interaction you’ll have here. Would you merge effortlessly into our main branch? Then keep on reading.
What you’ll be doing
- Work in the Growth department, collaborating with 6 full-stack engineers, an engineering manager, 2 designers, a PM and our Senior Director of Growth
- Build innovative features and functionality that empower customers to effortlessly test, fall in love, and adopt Famly. In other words, help us build a product that enables us to grow at scale by being so effortless to adopt and use that customers can self-educate and self-onboard.
- Build MVPs to validate our assumptions and turn our validated assumptions into fully-fledged robust features
- Take ownership over our projects, initiatives and processes. Identify what works and what doesn’t, and take action to constantly improve things around you
- Maximise not only self productivity, but combined team productivity, communicating the right things at the right time through the right channels, and automating manual work
- Collaborate on cross-team engineering initiatives to drive our long-term technical vision forward
- Frontend: Type Script, React
- Backend: Functional Scala backend with a Graph QL API and a legacy PHP backend with a REST API
- Databases: My SQL, Dynamo DB
You’ll thrive in this role if you are
- Excited about working in a fast-paced environment, with lots of ownership and opportunities for continuous growth and mastering your craft
- Motivated by making a real difference for our customers and want to deeply understand the problems you are solving
- Product and business minded, eager to collaborate closely with PMs and designers on what we should be building
- A good communicator of feedback, expectations and information in clear and kind ways, both in written and spoken form
- Data driven and familiar with product analytics to measure adoption and success - and to see the impact of your work up close
- Experienced and proficient in our tech stack (or similar) and strong ability to work across backend and frontend
- Experienced in functional programming
How we work in Growth
The Growth department operates independently from the Product and Engineering (P&E) department, but our core focus remains on product development. This allows us to chase US product-market fit with a small team that can be more scrappy, iterative, and agile. Growth has in the past focused on driving product-led growth (PLG) globally at Famly, but this year we’ve zoomed in on the US, figuring out how to break through the market with a PLG strategy. Although we function as a separate department, we collaborate closely with our colleagues in P&E to ensure alignment in building a scalable and sustainable platform that drives Famly forward in the long run.
The Growth department is organized into two squads, each focused on a specific business objective. Each squad consists of 3-4 engineers, a designer, and a product manager, and typically runs 1-2 projects at a time. We keep our planning process lean—project proposals emphasize high-level direction rather than providing detailed implementation details. This allows the team to take ownership and collaborate in short iterations, finding the best solutions within the given constraints.
While we don’t adhere strictly to a specific software development methodology, our approach is inspired by practices from Shape Up and Extreme Programming, enabling us to remain flexible, iterative, and focused on delivering value.
Since our squads are aligned around business objectives rather than fixed domains, the engineering work is very diverse, which is why we value full-stack expertise in all our engineers.
You’ll love working here because
- We offer pension, health insurance, and maternity/paternity leave.
- You get a clear career framework and coaching to make sure you’re growing, a 10,000 DKK personal development budget and a ‘We’ll buy you any book you want’ policy.
- We’re all about hiring a diverse array of clever people - who are kind and good humans too. It means Famly is full of top thinkers and generous teammates waiting to help you shine.
- A value of ‘make your colleagues shine' is all about breaking down silos, celebrating one another, and staying connected across departments, offices, and oceans.
- We like to give a lot of ownership both in terms of responsibility and freedom to try new, challenging tasks.
- Top-notch work equipment.
- A lot of flexibility for you to work in the way (and place) that suits you best, while making sure we maintain a strong in-office connection.
- Social activities… enjoy many opportunities for team fun with dinners out, office BBQs, Friday bar, big quarterly social events, game nights, and more!
