Åbo Akademi

Doctoral positions within the doctoral pilot / doktorandbefattningar inom doktorandpiloten Immune Systems IMMUDOCS

Turku

September 2, 2024

Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) is an internationally acknowledged research university with an extensive responsibility for providing education in Swedish in Finland. With its international research community and its strong Nordic ties, Åbo Akademi University has an acclaimed and recognized position within research and education both nationally and internationally.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering offers 3 funded positions for doctoral researchers (3 years/position) within the doctoral pilot Immune Systems (Immu Docs).

The Immu Docs consortia is coordinated by the University of Turku and the In FLAMES Flagship. The In FLAMES Flagship is a joint effort of Åbo Akademi University, University of Turku, and the associated ecosystem. It aims at being an internationally recognized, top-level, immunological research and development cluster attracting both researchers and business partners. It will produce break-through knowledge on immunological principles and diseases. The Flagship also aims to provide novel discoveries, which lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory disorders. Innovations, internationally recognized scientists, an extensive state-of-the-art research infrastructure and intensive academy–industry interactions form the foundation of the In FLAMES Flagship research.
Infections, autoimmune diseases and inflammatory diseases are major challenges for healthcare in the future. These diseases are caused by abnormal immune responses and consequently, influencing the immune system is at the core of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Therefore, healthcare urgently needs specialists who understand the possibilities and costs of immunological treatments.
The business world also needs immunologists. Already more than a hundred companies operating in the rapidly growing field of life sciences in the Turku region have a major, constant need for immunological expertise. This need is not limited to Turku only: the situation is the same in other life science companies operating in Finland. The majority of Finnish universities participate in the Immu Docs pilot, and thus Turku’s strong immunological expertise benefits the whole country.
The positions are available within the following doctoral programmes at ÅAU:
  • Biosciences (main subjects: Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Pharmacy and Drug Development)
The positions start on January 1, 2025. The Ph D positions are within the projects listed below. For more details on the projects and the supervisors please see the project descriptions.
