Doctoral Students in Mathematics of Sensing, Imaging and Modelling doctoral education pilot (5 positions)
The LUT School of Engineering Science is looking for 5 junior researchers in applied mathematics.
The positions are located at the Department of Computational Engineering. The department's research focuses on applied mathematics, machine learning, and computational statistics. It hosts the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Inverse Modelling and Imaging, funded by the Research Council of Finland, as well as the Flagship of Mathematical Modelling, Observation, and Imaging (FAME). The main objective of the junior researcher is to complete a doctoral degree on a topic aligned with the research programme of FAME. Research topics include inverse problems, partial differential equations, numerical analysis, approximation theory or computational statistics. The research can be theory- or application-oriented, with possible applications in areas such as environmental remote sensing.
Applicants must have a master’s degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g., mathematics, physics or computer science), the ability to complete the doctoral degree within the normative duration of the studies for the degree and a right to complete third-cycle studies at LUT University.
In addition, junior researchers need to have a valid right to complete third-cycle studies at LUT after three first months of their employment relationship.
The positions are funded through the Doctoral Education Pilot for Mathematics of Sensing, Imaging and Modelling (DREAM).
Employment relationship and pay
The positions are based in Lappeenranta and Lahti. The work will start between August 2024 and January 2025. The employment relationship is fixed-term with a six-month trial period. The junior researcher position will be available initially for one year and can be extended by three years, provided that the studies have progressed as expected.
The salary is based on the current collective agreement for Finnish universities. The typical gross annual starting salary for a junior researcher is approximately 32 500 euros.
