Espoo

FULL TIME

September 2, 2024

Aalto University is where science and art meet technology and business. We shape a sustainable future by making research breakthroughs in and across our disciplines, sparking the game changers of tomorrow and creating novel solutions to major global challenges. Our community is made up of 13 000 students, 400 professors and close to 4 500 other faculty and staff working on our dynamic campus in Espoo, Greater Helsinki, Finland. Diversity is part of who we are, and we actively work to ensure our community’s diversity and inclusiveness. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.
School of Engineering is an international unit with nearly 70 talented professors and 3400 full-time students. Currently, the Department of Mechanical Engineering has 30 professors together with lecturers, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral students, and technical staff. In total, the number of personnel is about 300.
We are now looking for a
Doctoral researchers (Ph D Students) in Artificial-Intelligence-Guided Multiscale Modeling
Are you passionate about multidisciplinary research with multiscale modeling approaches and artificial intelligence?
We are now looking for one doctoral researcher to work in the field of artificial-intelligence-guided multiscale modeling of metallic materials in the M2P research group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Aalto University. The researcher will be supervised by Prof Junhe Lian and at the same time co-supervised by Prof Andrea Sand and Prof Mikko Alava in the Department of Applied Physics in the School of Science. In this position, you will have a chance to conduct challenging and rewarding research in developing models for the multiscale and multiphysics behavior of materials, in particular by additive manufacturing, under a variety of environmental factors, which make great impacts on the hydrogen economy.
Our studies in the research group feature a unique and highly interdisciplinary character. The overall ambition is to develop digital solutions in the domain of materials and mechanics by combining advanced experimental techniques, multiscale and high-performance simulation, and data science-driven modeling The research topics are driven by academically challenging questions in the field of material mechanics and multiphysics, which involve deformation, fracture, thermal-mechanical, and hydrogen embrittlement behavior of engineering materials.
Your role and goals
You will be responsible for advancing the fundamental understanding and modeling of mechanics of engineering materials with focuses on i) multiscale and size effect of plasticity and fracture behavior, and ii) multiphysics coupling with thermal and hydrogen interaction. The research involves developing material models and computational techniques to describe the material behavior at different scales, in particular macro and meso, as well as scale bridging with micro and nano scales in collaboration with co-supervisors. You will also manage large-scale and high-performance supercomputer simulations at the Finish Supercomputer Center (CSC) and develop artificial intelligence-based models and tools to foster the physics-based simulation and/or interpret and correlate your data.
This position is part of the doctoral school of
Aalto University H2 Innovation Center
, which will be supported by common seminars, networking activities, and contact with industry. The work will also engage research tasks in EU-funded projects (
ERC project-HIGMAM
,
EU-Hy Way
). Participating in program meetings and network events is expected. As part of the doctoral program, you will also gain experience in teaching and supervising students. The selected candidate will need to apply for the study right in doctoral studies at Aalto University School of Engineering. Thus, please check the student information and admission criteria at
https://www.aalto.fi/en/study-options/aalto-doctoral-programme-in-engineering
. In particular, please pay attention to the required (English) language proficiency.
Your experience and ambitions
We are looking for a passioned research that would have:
  • Master’s degree or graduating with a Master’s degree soon in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Computational Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a similar field;
  • Strong background in mechanics (plasticity, fracture, gradient theory);
  • Background and experience in artificial intelligence algorithms and tools (e.g., LSTM, Tensor Flow, Py Torch, etc.)
  • Experience in micromechanical modeling (RVE, gradient crystal plasticity, homogenization);
  • Finite element simulation knowledge and experience with e.g., Abaqus (phase field approach or similar is a plus);
  • Computational mechanics knowledge and experiences (developing material subroutines for mechanics or hydrogen-metal interaction is a plus)
  • Excellence in communication and dissemination of research via publications and conference presentations;
  • Discipline and organization skills in task and time management;
  • Team working experience and spirit.
What we offer
  • An active, friendly, and highly collaborative multicultural and multi-disciplinary team - more than 15 members with complementary talents;
  • Training by experienced members and hands-on operation and collaboration on advanced material testing and characterization facilities;
  • Cutting-edge modeling experience and urgent & demanding research challenges in the field of sustainable development and green transition;
  • Integration to our network of collaborators across the globe with various-form scientific discussions (meetings, workshops, conferences) and collaborations;
  • Open, fair, encouraging, collaborative, inclusive, and curiosity-driven work environment to support your ambition and success.
  • Details about the group can be found here:
