Postdoctoral Researcher with a focus on allergy mechanisms and host-environment interplay

The University of Helsinki, Faculty of Medicine is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position on the Meilahti Campus. The position will be filled for a 2-year term as from 1 October 2024 onwards (or as agreed). Please find more information below and submit your application by 10th of September 2024.

Your role

We are seeking highly motivated applicants for a postdoctoral position working on allergy mechanisms with the help of in vitro and in vivo models and on host-environment interplay.

The employee will conduct research within two projects, both focusing on the mechanisms of food allergies or their desensitization, and characterizing the effects of host-antigen interplay during immune homeostasis and dysregulation, using human data and data from experimental models. The main task of the Postdoctoral Researcher will be to perform experiments in various study set-ups, analyze the obtained data and report the results.

The two-year (100 %) position is available from October 1st 2024 in the research projects of Docent Piia Karisola at the Research Program Unit of Human Microbes. The projects are funded by the Research Council of Finland and by Fuselius Foundation, of which the latter one is ongoing until 2027.

Our mission is to perform top quality research in understanding how different environmental exposures affect human wellbeing, focusing on the impact of environmental, allergens and microbes on gut/mucous barrier function and immunity. We work mainly with experimental models and different omics analysis.

Qualification and expectations
Qualified to be employed as a Postdoctoral Researcher is one who has:
  • a Ph D in a relevant area such as cellular or molecular biology, biochemistry, or immunology.
  • doctoral degree, which has been completed within the last three years. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

We expect that the applicant has:
  • a strong background working with various in vitro and in vivo models.
  • thorough experience on flow cytometry, transcriptomics/microbiomes, and basic wet-lab techniques including purification of nucleotides, RT-PCR and ELISA.
  • a strong background and knowledge of work with OMIC data analyses. Previous experience of OMICS analysis (e.g. RNA-seq, Single-Cell seq proteomics or metabolomics) is considered an advantage.
  • publications in peer-reviewed journals in the field of toxicology, immunology or other related fields.

Candidates should be highly motivated, have analytical skills and have great and versatile communication skills. We also expect you to propose own hypotheses, suggest experimental design to address them, and take advantage of the research community’s intellectual skill and resources to advance the knowledge of the study subject. Excellent ability to write scientific articles and communicate in English is required. The candidate is expected to cooperate in national and international networks. Therefore, a background of working in networks of researchers and international research experience is considered an advantage.
