The Finnish Museum of Natural History invites applications for two permanent positions of

Curator

specialising in systematics, taxonomy, biogeography and/or evolution of vertebrates or invertebrates, excluding insects. The appointments will begin on 1 April 2025 at the earliest or as agreed. Curators will be positioned at the Metazoa Team of the Zoology Unit.
About the positions
The work is focused on independent collection-based research, and we are looking for established top experts in the field. Other duties of the curators will include managing and developing the scientific collections (including collection databases) and supervising the work of collection technicians. The curators are expected to be active in applying external funding and building a research group. The curators will teach relevant topics in BSc and MSc courses (max. 5% of working time) and in addition to this, one of the two selected curators will contribute to the organization and development of teaching on the Bachelor level, in co-operation with the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences. As experts in their field, the curators will participate in the museum’s international collaboration and community engagement.

Qualifications
The curators must hold a doctoral degree and show a record of international publications demonstrating competence in the field of the position. Successful candidates shall have teaching skills necessary for the position, including the competence to supervise Ph D and MSc students. The curators shall be capable to lead a research group and write high quality funding proposals. Scholarly work outside Finland and evidence of international cooperation shall be given particular consideration. Teamwork skills are required. Experience and interest in working with scientific collections, as well as knowledge of the fauna of Finland are considered further assets. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.

To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointees must have good skills in English. The official languages of the University of Helsinki are Finnish and Swedish, but foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. In addition to teaching in BSc and MSc courses, one of the selected two candidates is expected to participate in the coordination and development of the Bachelor level biology program. Due to the regulations set by the Faculty, teaching is primarily offered in Finnish and consequently adequate Finnish skills (both spoken and written) are expected from one of the two candidates.

What do we offer?
The position is permanent including a trial period of 6 months. The curator’s salary will be based on level 6–7 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The gross monthly salary will be approximately 4100–5050 euros, depending on the appointee’s career stage and scholarly qualifications.

In addition to the research and infrastructure funding possibilities offered by the national and international funding sources, the Museum also has funding available for networking and small starter grants for research.
