Director of Development, Asia Pacific (Hong Kong)

This position reports to the Director of TNC Hong Kong, the DOD will lead a comprehensive private gifts program. The DOD will lead a development team, be responsible for the function’s day-to-day operations, build on existing fundraising activities to create and implement strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of a portfolio of gift prospects, including individual, foundation and corporate donors. They will be responsible for cultivating a solid working relationship with the regional teams and the Asia Pacific Council.
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE:
  • Lead Hong Kong-based philanthropy efforts to develop and execute the fundraising strategies that result in more than USD $5 million annually in outright private gifts and pledges, in support of The Nature Conservancy’s Asia Pacific overall ~USD $20 million annual fundraising goal.
  • Report to the Director of TNC Hong Kong and work closely with other in-region fundraisers, marketing, and regional senior leadership to raise the profile of Hong Kong as a global wealth market.
  • Manage a small philanthropy team, which encompasses middle to major and principal gift functions, corporate partnerships, and philanthropy operations.
  • Serve as a strategic liaison and administrator of the Asia Pacific Council and Leadership Council platforms and support the AP regional leadership and work with Relationship Managers (RMs) of Council members to maximize fundraising outcomes.
  • Build and manage a personal portfolio of 40 – 80 donors, including donors with the capacity to give over USD$250,000. Responsible for 50 – 75 visits and 125 – 250 moves annually. Individual annual fundraising goal of USD $1 million or more.
  • Serve on the Leadership Team of Hong Kong office and contribute to the overall strategy and direction of the office.
  • Lead, inspire, and manage the Hong Kong-based Philanthropy Team to build relationships and achieve funding objectives:
  • Set and meet fundraising objectives, evaluate results, and develop effective strategies as needed.
  • Recruit, develop, coach and retain high-performing philanthropy staff and nurture effective team collaboration.
  • Actively foster a deep collaboration in Hong Kong, with the Asia-Pacific region, with the Global Wealth Market initiative, and other TNC programs, and with trustees and donors to achieve TNC goals.
  • Travel as needed, occasionally on short notice and including international destinations. May require working extended and/or varied work hours, including on weekends.
  • Participate in philanthropy team meetings that are sometimes conducted outside of Hong Kong.
  • Work is generally performed in a professional office environment and involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements and minor physical exertion and/or strain.
What You’ll Bring:
  • Bachelor’s degree and 7 years related experience.
  • Experience asking for and closing major gifts.
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations and corporations.
  • Experience in planning and delivering budgetary responsibilities.
  • Experience managing and supervising a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in principles, practices, and procedures of charitable giving, particularly in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts and planned giving.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated;
  • Fluency in English is required and capability in Mandarin and Cantonese is desirable.
  • Master’s degree and 10+ years related experience, including working at a senior level preferred.
  • Experience recruiting and engaging HNWIs, board members and other volunteer leaders to generate gifts.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of and ability to navigate political sensitivity in various situations.
  • Track record of cultivating and closing major or planned gifts of USD $1,000,000 or more.
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with individual major donors, private foundations and corporations.
  • Experience building and successfully executing fundraising plans for a program or an organization.
  • Effectively communicate via presentations, conversations, and documents. The ability to speak confidently in public and/or through media.
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in charitable giving, particularly in the areas of campaigns, major and deferred gifts.
  • Experience managing teams, both through line supervision and “horizontal” influence, including planning and delivering budgetary responsibilities
  • Appreciation for the philanthropy tools and protocols employed by TNC, consistent with organizational policy and Standard Operating Procedures
