The role
You’ll be part of the Global Communications & Brand Team and our role is to protect and enhance the reputation of HSBC, and to engage our colleagues, build pride and confidence in, and commitment to, HSBC.

HSBC Global Banking and Markets (GBM) opens up opportunities for our clients globally through the power of our international connectivity, intellectual capital and market-leading capabilities.
Our clients are the largest multi-national corporates, asset owners and investors, and public sector entities around the world. We also enable CMB and WPB clients with our markets and investment banking expertise.
We use our intellectual capital, financial strength, and broad product capability to connect clients between East and West.
Reporting functionally to the Global Head of Communications for GBM and on an entity basis to the Head of Communications Asia-Pacific as Head of Communications, Global Banking and Markets (GBM), Asia Pacific, you will be responsible for internal and external communications for Global Banking and Markets communications in Asia-Pacific. This will involve business partnering to the Regional Head of Global Banking Coverage, Global Co-Head of Investment Banking and Global Head of MSS Emerging Markets, all based in Hong Kong. The role holder and their team will be required to provide strategic input to and support for wider GBM seniors in the region and globally.
The role holder will provide strategic counsel and direction to the Global Banking leadership team on employee engagement, as well as integrated internal and external communications for the business. A key objective is telling the story of GBM’s global strategy and contribution through content, channels and methods that reach employees, clients and wider stakeholders with maximum clarity and impact.
Integration and collaboration are key ingredients for success in this position. The role holder will be required to be a team player with a ‘sleeves-rolled-up’ approach to getting things done. Strong collaboration with the regional Communications team, the wider GBM global communications team, as well as Group Media Relations and the overall GC&B function are essential to achieving the truly integrated approach and adding maximum value for GBM and HSBC.
The role is based in Hong Kong working a hybrid pattern.
How will you help our team to succeed in the next 12 months?
During your first 12 months in role, will be involved in:
  • Lead the development of the GBM Asia and Inter-regional Communications plans.
  • Lead and deliver external and internal communications activity for GBM Asia leadership aligned to the integrated business structure, as well as functional and enterprise-wide priorities.
  • Apply commercial knowledge to identify issues impacting employee engagement and advise GBM Leadership accordingly
  • Ensure quality execution of GBM global external and employee communications campaigns and projects
  • Oversee the quality of change communications support for the strategic global transformation programmes in GBM
Business Partnering
  • This role will business partner GBM seniors in the region
  • They have the ear of the business as a trusted adviser and integrated business team member
  • They consider business colleagues to be the role and team’s principal customers. They are business-led as much as audience-led

  • The role holder will develop clear, creative and compelling content that brings the outside-in, especially through the lens of our clients, towards continuous improvement of culture and performance, engagement of our people and contribution to both the GBM and HSBC purpose

  • The role holder thinks like our audiences. HSBC is one organisation and brand. We tell a joined-up single story which recognises the contribution of and weaves in the story of GBM. This requires internal collaboration, building trust and an ethos of team-work, not least with Group and Region
  • They will proactively engage with and listen to colleagues across time-zones, disciplines and teams without relying on GC&B Ex Co members to connect the function or business
Communications including creative, AI platform and digital skills
  • The role holder has strong creative skills, including digital content generation and delivery skills, and a willingness to pro-actively get up-to-speed with the opportunity of artificial intelligence (AI) in communications
  • They have knowledge and understanding of all communication disciplines to represent the whole function to business customers, and proactively upskill on emerging themes and practices in the communications space
Evidence
  • Rigorous use of measurement, feedback and insight (e.g. client and employee engagement data) to inform activities and maintain focus on tangible business and people outcomes

Leadership & Teamwork
  • Lead the GBM Asia-Pacific communications team and be a proactive, positive contributor to the wider GBM communications team and Group Communications and Brand function
  • Role model HSBC values and exemplary behaviours, including responding to and offering mature and measured feedback as part of a high performing culture
  • Oversee recruitment and talent and succession planning. Help develop the required capabilities in others, and unlock the full potential of the team

  • Anticipate and identify issues that require a communications response and marshal team resources to deliver effective external and employee communications
  • Proactively develop and maintain relationships across the team and business
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the wider GBM Communications and Group Communications teams to ensure seamless delivery of priority programmes

  • This role is an important voice of the GBM business unity with employees, the media, government, trade and consumer groups. To this end, the role will require the incumbent to be a critical ‘thought leader’ and spokesperson
