Applications are invited for the position of Project Assistant / Junior Research Fellow (JRF) position in a DBT Ramalingaswami Grant titled
“Insect feeding and plant pollination: mechanics and neural control in natural contexts”
to Dr. Tanvi Deora, Department of Life Sciences (DLS), School of Natural Sciences, Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, Delhi-NCR (Shiv Nadar Io E), Greater Noida, Gautam Buddha Nagar, 201314 (U.P.).
The position/s is temporary and is available immediately.
Essential qualification: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in sciences/engineering from a UGC accredited university. Additionally, for JRF: Post Graduate Degree in Basic Science with any National level Test (NET, GATE) qualification or Graduate Degree in Professional Course with National Level Test qualification.
Desirable: Candidates with a quantitative background (such as degree or experience in mathematics/engineering/neuroscience/computer science/physics) along with biology or experience with using Arduino/Raspberry are highly encouraged to .
Fellowship:
The fellowship amount is per DBT norms, Govt of India guidelines. Project Assistant will be compensated at Rs. 20,000/- pm without any additional benefits. Candidates with NET/GATE qualification will be considered for the JRF with fellowship amounts as per DBT norms (Rs. 37,000/- pm + 8% HRA).
Duration: The position/s will be made for a period of 6 months with an option for renewal. It is available immediately.
Project Description: The lab studies the neural and mechanical mechanisms underlying insect feeding and pollination interactions. We use behavioral, neural and comparative approaches to ask how insects extract sensory information from their environment, how they process feedback from different sensory modalities and use it to control their movements. For more information, visit https://sites.google.com/view/tanvideora/home. The position involves working closely with the PI and students alongside various projects. These might include designing and developing behavioral assays to study how insects sensing and learning influences feeding and pollination interactions. Some might also involve using imaging techniques to study neuroanatomy of circuits involved in sensing and motor control of mouthparts during pollination. The fellow/assistant will be expected to do experiments, analyze their data and participate in other lab research activities. They would participate in group meetings and departmental seminars, present their work and engage with research activities at SNIo E. A keen interest in animal behavior and quantitative skills are desirable. Although experience of working in these areas is preferred, it is not required.
