Engineering Shift Supervisor - DCOM

Key Responsibilities and tasks
- Lead, manage, and supervise a team of mechanics and technicians responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of buses
- Assign daily tasks and manage workload distribution to ensure timely and efficient vehicle servicing
- Support the team to ensure they meet quality and safety standards and ensure that all maintenance work is carried out to the highest standards and in compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
- Prioritise and plan maintenance activities based on operational needs, ensuring minimal vehicle downtime
- Work with the Engineering Manager to plan for long-term maintenance needs and major repairs or overhauls
- Conduct regular quality checks and inspections on completed work to ensure adherence to safety and technical standards
- Assist mechanics in diagnosing and troubleshooting complex mechanical and electrical issues and provide support in the resolution of problems that arise during repairs or maintenance
- Ensure that vehicles are returned to service promptly after repairs, while maintaining high safety and performance standards
- Monitor inventory levels of parts, tools, and equipment necessary for the maintenance and repair of the fleet and coordinate with the Stock Controller
- Ensure that tools and equipment are properly maintained, calibrated, and in good working order
- Promote and enforce a strong health and safety culture within the workshop, ensuring that all safety procedures are followed
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections using the company’s fleet management system.
- Ensure that maintenance documentation is up to date and readily available for audits or inspections.
- Prepare and submit regular reports on vehicle maintenance, team performance, and fleet condition to the Engineering Manager.
- Oversee safety inspections of buses, ensuring they meet regulatory standards for roadworthiness and ensure any defects identified during inspections are addressed promptly, preventing service disruptions.
- Work closely with the Operations department to ensure that buses are available for service in line with operational schedules.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback to mechanics and technicians to promote continuous improvement.
- Identify training needs within the team and coordinate training sessions to enhance technical skills and safety awareness.
- Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment, encouraging open communication and problem-solving
- Respond to emergency maintenance issues, such as vehicle breakdowns, to minimise service disruption
- Coordinate breakdown recovery and ensure that vehicles are quickly repaired and returned to service.
- Liaise with external vendors or contractors as needed for specialised repairs or services
- Work closely with the Operations team to ensure that buses are available for service in accordance with scheduling requirements.
- Communicate with the Fleet Planner and Operations to report on vehicle availability and maintenance status.
- Responsibility in managing, participating, and complying with the Integrated Management System (IMS).
- Knowledge and Skills Requirements:
- Previous experience in a supervisory role within the bus or transport industry, with strong technical knowledge of bus maintenance and repair.
- Expertise in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems on buses and vehicles.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide a team of mechanics.
- Strong knowledge of fleet management software, scheduling tools, and vehicle maintenance processes
- Qualified QQI HGV Level 6
- Category B or D Driving licence
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to work autonomously and make decisions
- Excellent attention to detail
- Work well under pressure, prioritise workload and meet deadlines
- Positive attitude to health and safety
