Who We Are
(CHI) is leading on the clinical and operational transformation of acute paediatric healthcare and consists of hospitals at Crumlin, Temple Street and Tallaght as well as an Urgent Care Centre at Connolly hospital in Blanchardstown.
Description
Commencing July 2025, we are delighted to offer a 12 month Fellowship programme based in CHI Temple Street in paediatric anaesthesiology with some exposure to paediatric critical care and transport of the critically ill child.

Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) currently provides quaternary level paediatric care at 3 main specialist sites; Tallaght hospital, CHI Crumlin and CHI Temple Street. CHI Temple Street’s General Anaesthesia caseload is approximately 6000 cases per annum. It has currently one of the busiest Paediatric Emergency Departments in Europe. It is expected that in 2025, these historic hospital sites will amalgamate into the New Children’s Hospital, one of the largest healthcare investments ever to take place in the state. This will provide a much anticipated, unique and exciting learning opportunity as 3 different hospitals unite under one roof. The transition period will provide many challenges and will be an opportunity to learn about teamwork as we join together.

Clinical excellence:
At CHI, our commitment to clinical excellence and delivering world-class service to our patients and their families is central to our core ethos.
Fellows in our programme will engage with a high-level caseload that includes quaternary level surgical procedures including specialties such as neonatal, complex spinal, neurosurgery, craniofacial surgery, thoracic and renal transplant surgery. The amalgamation of facilities will consolidate additional quaternary surgical procedures including cardiac and oncological surgery into one comprehensive location.

Our Fellows will be provided with an opportunity to participate in our Acute Pain Service to follow the patient post-operatively and provide a holistic view of the patients journey. We have a chronic Pain Clinic, specialising in the assessment and management of complex and chronic pain in children, engaging with a multidisciplinary approach. We work closely with our PICU colleagues and Fellows are encouraged to spend some time in the PICU. The Irish Paediatric Acute Transport Service (IPATS) which retrieves and manages critically ill children from all around Ireland is based in CHI Temple Street and the Fellow is provided with opportunity to participate in this service.

Educational Programme:
Our educational initiatives are designed to enrich the learning experience. Fellows will benefit from dedicated tutors, mentors, thrice weekly teaching including a mixture of Grand Rounds, didactic lectures, Journal Club and M&M meetings.

Clinical Responsibilities:
The Fellowship entails a 12 month appointment with a mix of clinical and non-clinical responsibilities. Fellows will engage in anaesthesia provision across various specialties and engage in a 2 month PICU module.

Essential Criteria for Paediatric Anaesthesia Fellow:
1. Completion of Specialist Training in Anaesthesia (or equivalent) before the Fellowship start date
2. Six months’ prior experience in a Paediatric Anaesthesia Training post
3. Eligibility for registration with the Irish Medical Council
4. Demonstrate interest and experience in audit, quality improvement and/or clinical research

Application Process:
Applications for the above posts must be submitted via the career page https://childrens-health-ireland.rezoomo.com/jobs/ .
Applicants should also submit an up-to-date CV and cover letter to the Fellowship Leads Dr Chis Holmes (cjhol@me.com) and Dr Kay O’Brien(brineykay@gmail.com)
