Kitchen Assistant

The Kitchen Assistant will work within the catering team at Cobh Community Hospital in Cork to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the hospital kitchen. The role involves assisting with food preparation, maintaining cleanliness, ensuring health and safety standards are adhered to, and supporting the chefs and kitchen staff in delivering high-quality meals to patients, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation: Assist chefs in preparing ingredients, portioning meals, and assembling food items for patient meals in accordance with dietary requirements and portion control.
Meal Service: Help with the plating and distribution of meals to residents, ensuring that each meal meets specific dietary needs and is presented attractively and hygienically.
Cleaning & Hygiene: Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen environment. This includes washing dishes, cleaning kitchen surfaces, and ensuring equipment is sanitised after use in line with hospital and HSE (Health Service Executive) guidelines.
Stock Management: Assist with receiving and storing food deliveries, ensuring proper rotation of stock, and alerting the kitchen manager or chef to any shortages or expired items.
Waste Management: Properly dispose of food waste and ensure recycling protocols are followed.
Health & Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with all food hygiene and health and safety regulations, including wearing the appropriate protective clothing, using equipment safely, and following hospital infection control protocols.
Support for Dietary Requirements: Understand and adhere to specific dietary guidelines (e.g., low-sodium, diabetic, vegetarian, etc.) as per hospital and patient needs.
Communication: Work collaboratively with the kitchen team and hospital staff to ensure smooth operation of the kitchen, timely service of meals, and effective communication about dietary concerns or changes.
Experience:
Previous experience in a kitchen or catering role, preferably in a healthcare or institutional environment, is desirable but not essential. Training will be provided.
Knowledge:
Basic understanding of food hygiene, food preparation, and kitchen safety. HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) certification or willingness to obtain it is preferred.
Skills
Shifts may vary based on hospital needs, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays. Flexibility in availability is required.
