36 Months, Fixed Purpose, Whole-Time Post
Position Summary
Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Research Fellow to support the work of pillar 1 of the ELEVATE programme – PREVENT: Prediction of the at-risk pregnancy and prediction of sentinel events before birth associated with early brain injury and CP.
The INFANT Centre leads the ELEVATE Programme for Programme for Prediction, Early Detection & Intervention in Cerebral Palsy. This 5-year programme is focused on the prevention, early detection, and treatment of brain injury and cerebral palsy (CP) in infants during the period of maximum neuroplasticity (up to 2 years of age). The ELEVATE Programme has been jointly funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the Cerebral Palsy Foundation through the SFI Strategic Partnership Programme. ELEVATE brings together researchers in research centres and tertiary level maternity hospitals across Ireland as well as three academic centres: University College Cork (UCC), Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Our vision is to work with the Irish Cerebral Palsy community to create a world-leading hub for research and innovation in the field of early brain injury and Cerebral Palsy. The ELEVATE programme, which comprises 4 key research pillars, aims to identify risk factors of Cerebral Palsy early, to prevent Cerebral Palsy, and to reduce the severity of the condition when it does occur. By targeting the earliest possible interventions and proactively preventing complications, the programme will optimise the health of children with Cerebral Palsy and improve their ability to participate in everyday life.
INFANT is now accepting applications for a Clinical Research Fellow to support the work of pillar 1 of the ELEVATE programme – PREVENT: Prediction of the at-risk pregnancy and prediction of sentinel events before birth associated with early brain injury and CP.
The Clinical Research Fellow will be required to have significant experience in obstetrics and in clinical research and a desire to pursue a Ph D in the field of obstetrics.
Education and Public Engagement (EPE) is a key part of the ELEVATE programme. We will educate and upskill health care workers in diagnosing CP. We want to provide parents and their families with information that empowers them to advocate for and provide the best care possible for their children – which includes having a strong voice in the direction of research. Raising public awareness of the current research and best practices related to CP is important. All researchers involved in the ELEVATE programme will actively participate in meaningful EPE activities and we will provide training to support effective communication to all our researchers.
Project Outline
Multiple fetal maternal factors lead to increased risk of poor pregnancy and fetal outcome. In this project we plan to identify the most important maternal and fetal risk factors for pregnancy outcomes, focussing on complications such as fetal growth restriction, and sentinel events in labour, with outcomes including stillbirth and neonatal encephalopathy. We also aim to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to interrogate extensive maternal and neonatal datasets already available at the INFANT Research Centre. We will develop models to provide essential clinical decision-making support to identify and better monitor those pregnancies deemed at risk thus preventing intrapartum stillbirth or early brain injury in survivors.
Research Supports
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, independent and enthusiastic researcher with a strong interest in conducting original interdisciplinary doctoral research.
The ELEVATE Programme has been jointly funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and the Cerebral Palsy Foundation through the SFI Strategic Partnership Programme.
The successful candidate will be working under the supervision of Prof Keelin O’Donoghue at the INFANT Research Centre. The candidate will work closely with the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre (UCC) project members, and the Department of Engineering (UCC), as well as clinical/academic collaborators at the Rotunda Hospital and RCSI, Dublin.
