Organizational Setting
The Office of Communications (OCC) is responsible for both external and internal communications of the Organization. It aims at making FAO's communications strategic, coherent, focused and impactful, while ensuring effectiveness and efficiency in communication-related operations.
The post is located in the Office of Communications, OCC, at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.
Reporting Lines
The Communication Officer reports to the Senior Communication Officer, Head of the Internal communication Branch, OCCCD.
Technical Focus
Production of internal communications content, including writing, editing, graphic design, video and management of workflows. Oversight and training of team members in executing effective internal communications
Key Results
Contribute to the development and strengthening of internal and external communications, multimedia production, web content, media relations and publishing activities of the Organization.
- Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology-related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support internal and/or external communication.
- Produces/drafts a variety of information and reports, as well as inputs for communication-related documents, multimedia products and online content.
- Devises, implements and monitors communications strategies and provides day-to-day support for strategic outputs.
- Designs and develops new media outlets/assets to increase brand visibility and maximize impact on communication platforms.
- Establishes, develops and maintains working relationships with key media organizations, journalists and other relevant strategic partners as part of external communication activities in order to raise the visibility.
- Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems and processes.
- Participates in multidisciplinary teams and/or leads working groups/teams; collaborates and coordinates with other Divisions/Offices/Centres on work groups and committees and promotes best practices as they relate to communications.
- Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations.
- Supports the management and production of original content explaining the work of the Organization based on technical and administrative material available, as well as background and staff interest stories related to the work of the Organization for the global internal audience.
- Supports the management and coordination of materials designed for an internal audience and related activities, such as events to ensure timely and accurate publication of content to internal channels, according to corporate needs and priorities.
- Supports the creative production and direction of global staff events.
- Drafts, edits and designs a variety of corporate communications, ensuring consistency with FAO's corporate communication policy.
- Develops the production of a variety of materials including graphic and video content for internal communication (IC) channels guiding team members.
- Coordinates, writes and finalizes communication plans related to content produced for internal communications.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
- Advanced university degree in communication, social science, journalism, political science or a related field.
- Five years of relevant experience in communication, intranet/web publishing and/or design with demonstrated management responsibilities.
- Working knowledge (proficient - level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate - level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

- Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions.
- Demonstrated experience in managing activities and teams related to internal communications, intranet/web publishing and/or design as well as event production and direction.
- Extent and relevance of experience in drafting high-quality written materials for a wide variety of audiences.
- Extent and relevance of experience in intranet/web publishing and/or design.
- Experience training and guiding team members in internal communications workflows and use of tools and applications
- Ability to write, edit and synthesize complex messaging in English for an internal audience.
- Extent and relevance of experience in managing content production, in particular graphic and video content for internal channels and events.
- Advanced knowledge of Adobe creative suite (Illustrator, In Design, Photoshop and Premiere Pro) and Site Finity.
- Strong understanding of FAO policies and programmes is considered a strong asset.
- Extent and relevance of experience in the field of communication services for prominent organizations, particularly at the international level.
- Understanding of FAO policies and programmes is considered a strong asset.
- Extension of fixed term appointments is based on certification of performance and availability of funds
- FAO reserves the right not to make an appointment.
