YOUR TEAM
You’d be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group headed by Alberto Diaspro, where experts collaborate towards the development of novel technologies and instruments for fundamental research in optics, life sciences and smart materials at the nanometer scale integrated with focused applications in oncology and neuroscience. We are experienced, beyond super-resolved optical approaches, in the research areas related to quantum microscopy of two-photon excitation/absorption and of single photon detection using SPAD arrays. At Diaspro Lab you will find a multicultural and multidisciplinary international research environment where physics, biophysics, photonics, bioengineering, optics and computer science including AI are merged in a kind of melting pot with the aim of conceiving, designing, realizing, utilizing methods and techniques to study biological systems to advance nanosciences and life sciences.
The Nanoscopy Research line (https://www.iit.it/it/web/nanoscopy-and-nikon-centre-iit) is coordinated by Alberto Diaspro, full Professor of Applied Physics, who has extensive experience in optical microscopy and nanoscale biophysics. He is active in European and national projects and has over 400 scientific articles with 18000 citations (H = 65, Google Scholar). AD designed and realised the 1st Italian multiphoton microscope (1999) and a hybrid artificial “nanobiorobot” (2000-2005) and directed the design and realisation of the 1st Italian nanoscopy architecture at IIT (2008). He co-founded the Genoa Instruments start-up in 2019. AD received the Gregorio Weber Award for excellence in fluorescence studies in 2022.
The research is linked with EU projects, including Eurobioimaging, COMULIS, MOSBRI, and INSTRUCT, and technical scientific collaborations with Nikon, Leica, and Coherent companies. Two registered marks, LIQUITOPY® (LIQUId Tunable microsc OPY) and MOMIX® (Multimodal Optical Microscopy Image Correlation Sensing), represent a groundbreaking development of the optical microscope carried out at Diaspro Lab. The research points to establishing a new paradigm in data collection and image formation with high impact in biophysics, bioengineering, and biomedicine. Such an innovative approach aims to realize a brand new multiscale and multimodal microscope allowing simultaneous contrast available in the image formation process including label-free non-linear and polarization-based optical methods and boosted by original algorithms developed in the framework of artificial Intelligence and computational models towards I-MOMIX.
Within such a framework, we are looking for an enthusiastic researcher to realize an artificial optical microscope based on the detection of label-free and optical microscopy data from biological cells to train an AI-based system to produce fluorescence images at the molecular level without fluorescence labelling. The label-free approach is based on phase contrast and polarimetry for producing several independent images that can be correlated with super-resolved fluorescence imaging (Diaspro, A., Bianchini, P., Callegari, F. et al. The case study is related to the study of the spatial organization of chiral structures, i.e., chromatin organization in cell nuclei (Ashraf M.W. and Diaspro A., On the structural organization of macromolecules using chiral sensitive differential scattering of circularly polarized light, Optics Communications, 522, 128639 (2022). https://doi.org/10.1016/j.optcom.2022.128639). The activity is mainly focused on realizing the appropriate software. At Diaspro Lab, we have the basic knowledge, the light sources and the single photon detectors that can allow us to succeed in such a challenging task under the umbrella of advanced optical nanoscopy (Diaspro, A., Bianchini, P. WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU SHINE
- A Ph D in Information Science, Computational Bioengineering, Physics including Biophysics (see for example: Biophysical Journal, Sep 03, 2024 Volume 123, Issue 17, pp2647-2956.)
- Documented experience and skill in artificial intelligence with a focus on imaging.
- The ability to properly report, organize, and publish research data
- Good command in spoken and written English
- Experience on methods like CNN, ICA, t ICA and similar.
- Knowledge of Python, Matlab, Huygens (SVI).
