The Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER)

is recruiting a

Research Associate (Post-doc, f/m) in Socio-Spatial Inequalities

  • Ref: 24-15
  • 2 years fixed-term working contract at LISER (extension possible upon conditions)
  • Full-time, 40 hours/week
  • Department: Urban Development and Mobility (UDM)
  • Work location: Belval (Luxembourg)
  • Deadline: September 15th, 2024
The Department of Urban Development and Mobility (UDM) at LISER would like to strengthen its position in research on the dynamics in socio-spatial inequalities by recruiting an expert in urban sociology, urban geography or other relevant social sciences to address challenging scientific and societal issues. The successful candidate is invited to engage with inequalities in all its dimensions (social, spatial, environmental). Thematic-wise in research, the focus could be put on for example the developments in socio-spatial disparities in mobilities, housing, employment and urban amenities, exposures to environmental risks and health. To that purpose, use can be made of rich data sets in our observatories on socio-spatial developments, housing and spatial dynamics and other data sources.

The Urban Development and Mobility department brings together researchers from geography, economics, sociology, and urban planning who draw on both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, with a strong spatial analysis component. The department has two research teams: Living with Urban Dynamics, focused on individual behaviours related to flexible living, health & space and urban analytics, and Governance of Urban Dynamics, working on cross-border integration, housing, land & planning and networks of finance. The department offers tailored support for those interested in developing research proposals for competitive funding opportunities. More information on the department can be found here: https://www.liser.lu/?type=module&id=149
Local and regional observatories:
Social observatories are in place in the cities of Esch-sur-Alzette (since 2019), Luxembourg (2020), Schifflange (2022) and Dudelange (2024). The aim of these social observatories is to regularly monitor and analyze the social situation in these cities, in order to inform policymakers about challenging social issues and support policy-making. An example of a recent report can be found here: https://schifflange.lu/2023/04/20/observatoire-social-de-la-commune-de-schifflange/. The regional observatory for the Eislek region is in preparation.
National observatories:

The Housing Observatory was founded in 2003 and is a collaboration between LISER and the Luxembourg Housing Ministry. It is the authoritative source in Luxembourg for housing prices and rental statistics, as well as for information related to residential land, the structure of housing production and the social consequences of the affordability crisis. More information on the Housing Observatory is available here: https://logement.public.lu/fr/observatoire-habitat.html. The Spatial Development Observatory was founded in 2007 and is a collaboration between LISER and the Ministry of Energy and Spatial Planning. It analyses the spatial dynamics that affect the territory of Luxembourg using quantitative and qualitative approaches and assesses the effectiveness of policy measures. Its most recent report can be found here: https://amenagement-territoire.public.lu/content/dam/amenagement_territoire/fr/actualites/2022/projet-pdat2023/pdat/projet-pdat2023-annexe-iii-diagnostic-developpement-territorial.pdf
Your role
In this context, the successful candidate will have two main missions:

  • Produce high-level academic publications and submit competitive research proposals on urban inequality drawing on detailed administrative microdata coming from Luxembourg institutional bodies (Land Registry, Social Security, population registers, etc.);
  • Stimulate synergies between the observatories within UDM to draw out the mechanisms that create multidimensional inequalities.
Your profile
  • A Ph.D. (or be close to completion thereof) in urban sociology, urban geography or other relevant social science;
  • A proven record of high quality research on socio-spatial inequalities, as well as a demonstrable societal impact in research outputs;
  • A good knowledge of quantitative methods (e.g. multivariate analyses and GIS), and in addition qualitative methods (e.g. participatory methods and urban experimentation);
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Proficiency in French or German will be considered as an asset to better understand the Luxembourg context.
