Are you passionate about research? So are we! Come and join us

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a Research and Technology Organization (RTO) active in the fields of materials, environment and IT. By generating relevant scientific knowledge and converting knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST empowers citizens in their choices, public authorities in their decisions and businesses in their strategies.

To address the urgent societal need for science-based management recommendations for forests under increasing pressure, and to leverage on the fast-developing expertise in multi-disciplinary forest research in Luxembourg, LIST, in collaboration with the University of Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research, has formed a dedicated doctoral training unit (DTU) on “Forest function under stress” (FORFUS). It consists of 4 inter-linked research clusters, focusing on below-ground processes, tree and canopy processes, remote sensing observations, and prediction and valuation of forest functions, providing a holistic view on forests as complex systems. See the project website to find out more about the FORFUS doctoral training unit here

How will you contribute?

In the current context of declining forest health, forest carbon (C) uptake and stocks are expected to decline due to an increase in tree mortality and autotrophic respiration. However, it remains unclear whether the amount of terrestrial C stock exported through runoff (mainly as CO2 and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)), which represent a significant fraction of the annual C balance of headwater catchments, and the underlying processes will also be altered. This is because a clear assessment of the sources of CO2 and DOC, the related biogeochemical pathways and the associated transport timescales are still to be fully resolved.

In this project, you will investigate how C export, its sources and biogeochemical pathways change under drought conditions in forested headwater catchments. The work will be carried out in the Weierbach experimental catchment (https://doi.org/10.1002/hyp.14140), where water fluxes and physico-chemical parameters of soil, ground and stream water are intensively monitored. You will install and maintain monitoring equipment in the field, such as sensors to measure dissolved CO2 and DOC concentrations in groundwater and stream water. You will design and carry out water sampling campaigns and laboratory work. You will examine radiocarbon (14C) signatures of particulate and dissolved organic/inorganic carbon (POC, DOC/DIC) to identify sources and transport timescales, as well as alternative tracing techniques (stable isotopes of water and C isotopes analysis). You will be involved in the rain exclusion experiment in collaboration with FORFUS-RT1.2.

You are also expected to carry out a literature review, formulate hypotheses and develop a research plan. Collaboration with other FORFUS Ph D candidates and colleagues at LIST will be encouraged. You will analyse statistically the collected data, present your results internally and at national/international conferences, and publish research papers resulting from your research.

You will be part of the Catchment and Ecohydrology (CAT) research group at LIST and work in close collaboration with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SWE). You will follow the rules and curriculum set out by the Doctoral School in Science and Engineering at the University of Luxembourg (https://www.uni.lu/research-en/doctoral-education/dsse/) and engage in courses and activities organised by the FORFUS DTU.
