Job description
Origins of poor health in contemporary societies are complex. To make a difference, efforts to address health problems need to take judicial, ethical, social, political and economic complexities in health care and health governance into account. Critical engagement with the complexities found in (health care) institutions, regulations, and emerging technologies is crucial to make health care more socially robust, proportionate and legitimate. Research in Health Law, Ethics and Governance and teaching in European and Global Health Law emphasizes looking beyond national boundaries and disciplinary distinctions and to engage with multiple stakeholders to tackles issues like the datafication of health and health care, the boundaries of health versus nonhealth issues, and the regulation and ethics of public health.
As associate (or assistant) professor joining the Department of Health, Ethics and Society you have clear leading ambitions and capacities and will be an active member of the department. You will perform key roles in teaching, research and management. Your research will focus on Health Law, Ethics and Governance and related topics and be embedded in the research line of Health Inequities and Social Participation (HISP) of the Care and Public Health Research Institute (CAPHRI). Taking that as your starting point, you will also establish close collaborations with other research groups in the department, across research institutes and among and beyond our Faculty and University.
Research activities:
Your research will be focused on topics relevant in a European and Global Health Law, Ethics and Governance context, such as policies and regulations regarding health data, research governance, and public health topics covering issues such as (infectious) disease control, environmental health, food quality and safety, mental health, or organ donation. Health Law research activities conducted in these, or similar, areas should align with the department’s critical approach to developments in health care and public health and be open to multi- and transdisciplinary collaborations.
Teaching activities:
In your teaching you will be responsible for developing, coordinating and delivering Health Law education at both Bachelor's and Master's level. This includes teaching primarily in our curricula in Health Sciences, Medicine, and European Public Health. In these contexts, you have the possibility to shape your own teaching profile and contributions based on your expertise, taking the expectations and requirements of the relevant curricula into account.
Summarizing you will:
- Conduct high quality research in Health Law, Ethics and Governance with a critical perspective and on urgent contemporary topics.
- Acquire, and support to acquire, national and international research funding for your own research and on behalf of junior member’s research.
- Actively contribute to all academic activities of health law and ethics in the research line of HISP and of the wider departmental research activities.
- Create social impact and disseminate knowledge and findings to wider audiences.
- Supervise Master students’ theses and Ph D candidates.
- Develop, coordinate and teach Global and European Health Law at Bachelor and Master level with a particular focus on the curricula in Health Science, Medicine, and European Public Health.
Requirements
- A Ph D in Health Law, or a related social science discipline (such as bioethics), with a proven profile in judicial subjects.
- A strong knowledge in Global and European health law and a standing strong publication record in these fields.
- Successful supervision of Ph Ds.
- Willingness to, and preferably experience with, the acquisition and leading of multi- and transdisciplinary scientific projects and research teams.
- Experience of high-quality teaching at Bachelor and Master level, also as a developer and coordinator and leader of teaching teams.
- Possession of the Dutch Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO) (or foreign equivalents), or a willingness to acquire this within 24 months of employment.
- Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English. Candidates who are not fluent in Dutch are expected to learn Dutch in the first years of their employment.
- A positive, flexible and constructive working attitude.
What we offer
As an Associate (or Assistant) Professor at the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:
- Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale 11 or 12 for Assistant Professor and scale 13 or 14 for Associate Professor, according to UFO profile Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from € 4,492 and € 8,322 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
- An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 0.8 FTE. Upon proven suitability, the employment contract will be converted to an indefinite contract.
- At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.

At the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML), everything revolves around healthy living. The Department Health, Ethics and Society (also known as Metamedica) is part of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Lifesciences. Our team is dynamic and multidisciplinary in nature, with contributions from a range of health humanities disciplines, including ethics, law, sociology, anthropology, history, and philosophy. Its central ambition is to contribute to critical reflection on developments in biomedical science and healthcare through education and research, both locally and internationally/global.
