Are you looking for a challenging job in a dynamic team? The Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture (AHM) which is one of the five Research Schools within the Amsterdam Institute for Humanities Research (AIHR) is looking for two enthusiastic and experienced as part of the Horizon Europe research project, DIGHT-NET, Sustainable, Usable and Visible Digital Cultural Heritage: Twinning for Excellence, led by Prof. Ihab Saloul.

AHM, as a thematic research school, fosters a dynamic, interdisciplinary and transnational approach across various disciplines. AHM’s mission and profile integrate all branches of research that focus on the material and intangible remains of the past, the reciprocal relations between objects, meanings and representations, and the dynamics of memory. AHM’s research is carried out from diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives: in concept-oriented, object-oriented and user-oriented approaches.

AHM’s research agenda is streamed into five Research Themes that cross and connect the fields of heritage, memory studies and material culture: Museums & Memorials, Heritage & Conflict, Transnational Memory Narratives, Digitality & E-Memories, Materiality & Material Culture. Each of these themes relates to several working research groups in the school, but has in principle a rather open character, and closely collaborates with the other research themes and research groups.

What are you going to do?

You will work in the research team of the Horizon Europe research project, DIGHT-NET, Sustainable, Usable and Visible Digital Cultural Heritage: Twinning for Excellence, led by Prof. Ihab Saloul. In this project, the University of Amsterdam will be working together with Tallinn University, the University of Bologna and the University of Turku to achieve a long-standing contribution to the European cultural heritage and its digital transformation.

The goal of the project is to enhance research capacity, broaden the research partnership and increase the visibility and attractiveness of digital cultural heritage studies. To mobilise and amplify digital cultural heritage research locally, nationally and internationally, ensure sustainability and maximise the impact, the joint research hub of Digital Cultural Heritage studies (DIGHT-Hub) shall prototype a Twinned Digital Archive of Juri Lotman and Umberto Eco, and build a semiotic theory of digital cultural heritage.

Your tasks and responsibilities:
  • archival recording & researching new cataloging and collection management strategies;
  • developing a virtually accessible online for developing a new digital-mapping technology using three-dimensional modelling software;
  • organising project workshops, seminars, and training events together with project team members;
  • Help the research team with project reports and publications

What do you have to offer?

We are looking for two enthusiastic research project assistants who are willing to collaborate as part of a research team and are capable of working independently. Experience conducting digital, archival and network research and/or fieldwork is desirable.

Your experience and profile:
Candidates need to have the following qualifications:
  • a Master's degree in Heritage and Memory Studies, Museums Studies, Cultural Studies or in a related Humanities discipline.
  • Research skills in the theory of (digital) heritage, memory and museum studies demonstrated by a Master's thesis and the capacity to develop a track record of publishing monographs, edited volumes or in academic journals;
  • a strong cooperative attitude and willingness to engage in collaborative research;
  • Good social and networking skills and interest in communicating academic research to non-academic audiences;
  • good command of English (speaking and writing)

What can we offer you?

We offer a temporary employment contract for a period of 12 months with a probationary period of two months. Based on a positive evaluation, the contract will be extended with 24 months. The employment contract is for 5,5 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 1 October 2024.

Your salary, depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between € 3.186 to € 4.255 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
