Child Protection Social Worker

  • Permanent 0.9FTE, 36 hours per week position available within our Child and Family Safety Service
  • Registration with NZ Social Work Organisation and a current APC essential
Mō te tūnga | About the Role
Our Child and Family Safety Service, Tiaki Whānau, is a multidisciplinary team providing a specialist service for tamariki (children) and rangatahi (young people).
Based at the Christchurch Hospital campus our team is divided into a variety of workstreams including the Violence Intervention Programme, Sexual Abuse Team, Gateway and Infant to Teen assessments. Our Integrated Safety Response team is currently based at Hillmorton Hospital.
This position is designed for the candidate to work 0.9 FTE as a front-line case holding child protection social worker, predominantly specialising in sexual abuse assessment and support for children 0-12 years at Tiaki Whānau, and 13-18 years at the Cambridge Clinic to provide coverage from 8.30am-5pm on weekdays.
You will also offer an advisory service to staff regarding child abuse and neglect and work with health professionals and other agencies (Women’s Refuges, Stopping Violence Services, Police, Child Youth and Family Services, Non-Government Organisations) to promote and build relationships between services when managing Child Abuse and Family Violence cases.

As a Registered Social Worker in our Child and Family Safety Service you will have excellent interpersonal skills in order to work together in our wider team by networking and building relationships. You will be someone who is equipped to handle stressful emotional situations and have the flexibility to cope with change.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and Experience
  • Relevant Tertiary Qualification in Social Work
  • Experience in family violence and a minimum of working 5 years in child protection is desirable.
  • Experience in training and presentation to groups
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring of staff is desirable
  • Computer literacy
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Have an awareness of and sensitivity to the cultural differences and expectations of health service consumers and different ethnic backgrounds
  • A current Driver’s Licence
  • Experience in health services in Canterbury health and/or Oranga Tamariki is desirable
