New Zealand Police delivers services that ensure communities are safe and feel secure, with less crime, road trauma and fewer victims. Police operates 24 hours a day in a complex environment actively preventing crime and crashes. With around 15,000 staff, we work from community-based police stations and large policing hubs, operate on land, sea and in the air, and respond to over 860,000 emergency calls every year.
Underpinning our operations are a broad and complex set of commercial arrangements. We are seeking a Director of Procurement & Commercial who can not only ensure we have robust approach to all aspects of procurement, but can drive creative approaches with the market and our vendors to maximise value.
You will own our procurement strategy and engage with key suppliers and partners to ensure our officers have the resources and services they need to perform effectively. You will lead a team guiding our procurement practices, fostering strategic partnerships, and ensuring compliance with government standards. As the team is lean, building robust relationships with key leaders in the organisation and mentoring them so they can effectively manage commercial contracts will be critical to success.
Key Accountabilities:
Develop, enhance, and implement a sustainable Procurement and Commercial Strategy that enables Police’s Outcomes, maximises value for money, and ensures alignment with government rules and expectations.
Drive delivery of Police’s Procurement and Commercial outcomes whilst building strong internal and external relationships.
Champion sound procurement practices and enhance Police’s procurement and commercial organisational maturity.
Engage in cross-system collaboration with the Government Procurement Network, Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency, and other procurement leaders across government to gain and share insight into effective strategies, policies and practices.
Model the New Zealand Police Values – Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Commitment to Māori and The Treaty, Empathy and Valuing Diversity.

Strong negotiation and demonstrated strategic influencing skills
Have experience leading the end-to-end procurement function within a large or complex organisation
Have experience in driving material shifts in value for money with enterprise-wide and high value contracts
Have experience setting organisational procurement and commercial strategies and policies to enable desired outcomes
Strong negotiation and strategic influencing skills
Knowledge of New Zealand procurement policies and practices
Have a proven ability to enhance leadership and organisational capability, accountability and effectiveness.
Whakaritenga motuhake | Special requirements
This role is based at Police National Headquarters, Wellington. Some travel may be required.
Applicants must demonstrate a professional tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline, or ability to demonstrate equivalent relevant business experience. A commercial law qualification is preferrable but not essential.

Utu ā-tau | Salary
This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $203,400 and $215,434 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
