We are excited to offer this opportunity for an intern psychologist who is enrolled in a post graduate health psychology programme to join the Cancer Support team next year. In this role you will provide psychological care for patients and their whānau who have a new or recent diagnosis of cancer, with a goal of helping them to manage the impact of cancer in their lives, promote psychological resilience, and adjusting to a serious-illness. This role is based primarily at our Wellington Hospital site and works with our regional team to provide high quality support and adjustment to clients referred to our service following a diagnosis of cancer.
Duties will include:
  • Working with clients diagnosed with cancer to improve their ability to cope with the difficulties of a new or recurrent diagnosis, as well as their ability to engage in cancer treatment
  • Developing and completing your psychological assessment and intervention skills by maintaining a clinical caseload
  • Participating in clinical supervision with a consultant health psychologist, and peer supervision with the rest of the team
  • Working with the team to promote and grow our services across the region and in the community
Mō tō mātou rōpū – About our team
You will be joining a friendly, dynamic and highly motivated group of psychologists and social workers who are dedicated to improving health outcomes for those living with cancer. Our small, but passionate team, works across the Capital, Coast & Hutt Valley District, and provides a small outreach psychology service to people living in the Wairarapa. We value collaborative working and support other professions and services to grow their skills and capabilities in the provision of supportive care, as well as providing direct support to people diagnosed with cancer, and their whānau. Our service is flexible in the way we deliver care to clients and is continuously looking at ways to improve our outreach for people at risk of poor outcomes from cancer.
Moū – About you
We are looking for someone with a passion for this work, who is willing to contribute fully to our team culture, mission and who wants to learn about psycho-social oncology in the Aotearoa New Zealand context. You will be registered with the New Zealand psychology board under an intern scope of practice and be enrolled in an approved post graduate programme in health psychology. You will have a desire to work as part of a wider team to improve health outcomes for our most vulnerable of populations and be flexible and adaptable to changing service needs.
