Mō te tīma/About our team
We have the longest history in New Zealand of teaching Film, Media and Communication studies together (going back to 2000). The Media, Film and Communication Programme Media, Film, and Communication Programme has a growing reputation as a centre for scholarly excellence. The programme sits within the Division of Humanities and offers two Majors/Minors in Film and Media Studies and Communication Studies at the levels of BA, BA(Hons), Dip Grad, MA (Taught and by Coursework) and Ph D. Our students explore a wide range of subjects, including indigenous, popular and alternative media, genres, audiences, film festivals, documentary and much more.
Te mahi/The role
We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Communication Studies to join our intellectual community Pāpāho, Whitiāhua, Pārokoroko/the Media, Film and Communication programme at the University of Otago, which is located in Otepoti/Dunedin in Te Wai Pounamu, the stunning South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.
The role is a full time, permanent position. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and curriculum development at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, be involved in postgraduate supervision, and carry out a programme of independent research.
In this role you will be expected to develop and teach courses in our taught MA, Honours, and Undergraduate programmes. You should have a research profile and experience teaching any of the following areas:
  • Indigenous and/or intersectional approaches to communication.
  • Communication for social change.
  • Cultural policy studies.
  • Political economy of the media.
  • Environmental communication.
  • Public spheres.
We welcome applications from outside New Zealand. We particularly welcome applications from Māori and Pasifika scholars with research interests in any area of Communication Studies. The Media, Film and Communication Programme is committed to strengthening its curriculum and research in mātauranga Māori and Pasifika and to supporting the University of Otago’s Māori Strategic Framework and Pacific Strategic Framework.
Kā pūkeka me kā wheako/Your skills and experience
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a strong disciplinary grounding in Communication Studies with a Ph D in Communication studies as well as:
  • A developing research profile along with a commitment to and/or established connections with international and/or national researchers.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability to deliver high-quality teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach core courses in Communication studies.
  • A commitment to contribute their own specialist courses.
  • Experience supervising the research projects of undergraduate (Honours), postgraduate and Ph D students.
  • A commitment to supporting the University’s Māori, Pacific, and Sustainability strategic frameworks.
  • A commitment to being a productive collaborator with a track record of working collegially.
  • Commitment to upholding values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by Ngāi Tahu, as mana whenua in the region and broad knowledge of the cultural traditions of other iwi/hapū.
Pūroko/Further Details
The role is a full time (1 FTE), permanent position based in Dunedin. The appointment range for this appointment is:
  • Lecturer: $90,902 to $107,300
  • Senior Lecturer: $112,482 to $138,182
