Ko Taku Reo
NZSL Tutor - Hamilton
FULL TIME & PART TIME
August 1, 2024
At Ko Taku Reo, we are dedicated to nurturing the social and emotional wellbeing of New Zealand’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) children, helping them shape their identity and achieve their academic goals. Join our passionate nationwide team, committed to delivering high-quality education and support services to DHH students and their whānau. Be part of a community that values your enthusiasm and dedication to making a meaningful impact.
THE ROLE / TE MAHI
We are seeking a New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) Tutor to deliver high-quality one-on-one NZSL instruction and Deaf cultural responsiveness programs to Deaf students, their whānau and team members. In partnership with our education team, you will design and implement tailored programs and materials that support NZSL learners, improve their signing skills and raise awareness of Deaf culture. This is a permanent, part-time role (15 hours per week and the days and hours are flexible) and is based at Hamilton North School.
Given our students' wide geographical spread and occasional isolation, much of your interaction will be via video calls. We need someone who can effectively engage with learners remotely and ensure every Deaf student receives a top-tier education in a supportive environment.
ABOUT YOU / MŌ KOE
We are looking for a compassionate, approachable candidate who can foster meaningful relationships with DHH earners, their whānau and colleagues. You should:
- Hold a relevant qualification such as a Deaf Studies Certificate or equivalent
- Have a deep understanding and personal experience with Deaf culture
- Be proficient in NZSL, with an SLPI rating of Advanced or above
- Appreciate the diverse cultural backgrounds of our students and their families
- Have experience in DHH or special education settings
- Be knowledgeable about second language theories and capable of applying NZSL linguistics practically
- Possess a current driver’s licence and have a reliable vehicle
- Work for a passionate employer dedicated to learner success
- Engage in a broad, impactful role with the freedom to make your mark
- Benefit from a supportive team environment with development opportunities
If you are excited to join a dedicated and hardworking team where you can make a positive impact, please send us your CV and cover letter explaining why you'd love to work with us!
Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand and available for an interview. Applications close at 5pm on Sunday, 18 August 2024.
