About the team
The Tactical Engineering and Estimation group provides the engineering support and expertise to planning, investigations and project delivery functions within Grid Development. It ensures that Transpower's objectives are met through quality, cost-effective engineering design which is conducted by external Engineering Consultants.
The Protection & Automation Project Engineering team provides specialised technical design and engineering services. The team prepares technical needs and assesses conceptual and detailed Protection & Automation design for both internal and external customers. The team also manages Protection and Automation technical policies and standards which govern all protection design, service and purchase specifications for the transmission grid.
The opportunity
Due to lateral progression, you will lead ~seven engineers who provide project engineering support to the Asset Management Planning and National Project Delivery teams, as well as developing and maintaining Protection & Automation standards and standard design packages. You will enjoy varied mahi as you:
- Provide managerial, commercial, and operational leadership to ensure the divisional and team outcomes are delivered.
- Demonstrate sound commerciality inclusion and fairness in decision making. We have an outsourced model for the design of projects. This approach requires guidance to ensure that the level of risk that Transpower takes on is balanced against project costs and, as a result, you will play a key role in developing projects which maximise value.
- Engage team members in our strategic direction and effectively lead change as you support the Tactical Engineering Protection & Automation Manager in identifying and implementing new approaches, innovations, and technologies to drive savings and optimisation, along with improved safety outcomes through engineering design.
Supporting standards optimisation, you will utilise systematic thinking and value engineering enabling a risk-based approach to improve our agility and cost optimisation.
You and your team will be collaborating closely with highly experienced Principal Engineers to build Protection & Automation engineering solutions that safeguard our HV power system assets and maintaining grid users' connectivity. You will be supported and developed to initiate and guide continuous improvement to pursue the delivery of an efficient engineering service that enables project delivery within schedule, budget, and quality parameters.
Ultimately, you'll build intellectually stimulating relationships across Transpower and with our engineering design partners, customers, and stakeholders.

Based in our Auckland or Wellington office, you will have good strategic vision and experience determining and delivering the continuous improvements required in technical teams to meet future business needs.

To be shortlisted, your CV and cover letter will clearly demonstrate:
- A relevant Engineering Degree, ideally with CPEng, or a post graduate engineering management qualification at degree level.
- 10+ years of experience in electrical industry, specifically power system protection & automation design and/or project engineering management.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, develop and motivate others, especially with complex assignments.
- Experience in contract and project management, including improving the performance of outsourced consultants and service providers.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical audiences.
