Public Health Physician, Health Equity - Planning, Funding and Outcomes

Te whiwhinga mahi | The OpportunityAs the Public Health Physician within the Equity, Scientific and Technical team, Planning, Funding and Outcomes, is a national role, with a specific focus on addressing the life expectancy gap between Māori and non-Māori, between Pacific and non-Pacific, and other key population groups. Here, you will collaborate with a diverse national team comprising of highly skilled public health physicians, technical experts, and population health specialists. We currently have one full-time position available, and part-time roles will also be considered.
You will offer clinical leadership and expert advice in the development of robust implementation science research. This will include subject matter expertise, practical guidance to decision-makers across various intelligence and commissioning domains and critical thinking to shape, implement and meaningfully measure quality focused research projects. Your focus will be on understanding the clinical, policy, and community landscapes in which decisions are made across New Zealand.
Your responsibilities will encompass supporting an evidence-based, intelligence-driven approach aimed at enhancing population-level outcomes and achieving equity, in alignment with the health system's Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and equity strategies.
Ideally you will be able to offer expert advice to facilitate evidence-based development, planning, commissioning, and prioritisation of services across prevention, determinants, primary and community care, hospital and specialist services, and inter-sectoral collaboration. This ensures that services effectively meet population needs, promoting health gain and equity.
Mōu | About you
You hold a Medical Degree and a postgraduate vocational qualification in Public Health Medicine. You are a Fellow of the Public Health Medicine College, hold vocational Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, with a current Annual Practising Certificate. You actively engage in a Continuing Professional Development program relevant to Public Health Medicine.
Ka kawea e koe | You will bring:
  • Proficiency in establishing and nurturing effective internal and external relationships and partnerships, including the ability to foster collaboration across sectors and organisations.
  • Strategic thinking capabilities and a proactive approach to identifying opportunities for health gain and equity within the health sector. Expertise in population health leadership, with a focus priority populations, and specified regions.
  • The ability to critically appraise current practices and models of care and support health service planning, design, implementation, and improvement in accordance with evidence, intelligence, and equity strategies.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and epidemiological skills.
  • Previous experience in supervising or mentoring junior staff or registrars.
  • A good understanding of the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act 2022, the significance and obligations of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the priorities outlined in Wai 2575, with the ability to meaningfully integrate these expectations into practice and challenge others to do so.
  • A commitment to being a good Te Tiriti partner in all your actions. This includes an understanding of the significance of and obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and the ability to apply Te Tiriti principles in a meaningful way in this role Mandatory
