The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and restore nature spaces and species across Aotearoa.

He angitūtanga | About the role
Be part of a dynamic team protecting and enhancing New Zealand's unique ecosystems, from coastal marine areas to kauri forests, while engaging with local communities and visitors. As a Ranger Biodiversity, Community, Heritage and Visitors, you'll be at the heart of our conservation efforts in the wider Tauranga District. Based in Tauranga, you'll take on diverse projects that span across all functions of biodiversity, community and heritage & visitors.
The position will be focused on:
- Coordinating local input into statutory land administration, resource management, permits and concession processes
- Threatened species protection and management
- Predator control and habitat restoration, including wetland management and kauri dieback mitigation
- Heritage and recreational asset maintenance, including track and visitor facility management
- Community engagement and stakeholder relationship building
- Cross-functional support for various operational tasks

- Excellent relationship-building, organizational, and communication skills (written and verbal)
- Strong time management and prioritization abilities
- Passion for conservation and community engagement
- Full New Zealand Driver's License
- Physically fit and backcountry experience
- Tech-savvy with ability to learn new systems quickly
- 'Can-do' attitude with problem-solving approach
- Adaptability to work across various workstreams and changing priorities
- Strong health and safety focus, including leading others
- Practical skills for maintenance, repairs, and conservation work
- Experience working with iwi, community partners, landowners, and volunteers
- Understanding of conservation legislation and its impact on New Zealand's sustainability
- Data collection, analysis, and record-keeping skills
- Respect for te ao Māori me ngā tikanga and passion for working with whānau, hapū and iwi
- Ability to create and maintain positive relationships across public and private sectors
- Experience in practical conservation field delivery (e.g., threatened species, pest control)
- Practical hands on skill-set
- Tertiary qualification in a relevant field or equivalent experience
- Experience with Resource Management Act (RMA) applications and reporting
