Te Tari Ture o te Karauna | Crown Law
Rōia o te Karauna | Crown Counsel, Attorney-General Group
Pōneke - Wellington
Crown Law provides legal advice and representation services to the Crown in matters affecting the executive government. These matters include judicial review of government actions, constitutional questions including te Tiriti/Treaty of Waitangi issues, the enforcement of criminal law and the protection of revenue. Crown Law also provides leadership to several government networks.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
We are currently looking for Crown Counsel (ideally with 6+ years post-qualification experience) into our Treaty team, which deals with issues with a Māori/Crown dimension, particularly in the context of te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi. We are seeking applications from lawyers who are interested in:
  • working at the interface of government and te ao Māori;
  • advice work, litigation, mediation and negotiation for the Crown;
  • joining a diverse team of great people, who are committed to a collegial, supportive and enjoyable environment, and who care about the issues they are working on.
A role in this team offers:
  • cutting-edge work spanning a range of areas of law (including for example constitutional, public and administrative law, commercial law and equity/trusts);
  • development opportunities for anyone wanting to pursue a litigation career;
  • experience in Tiriti/Treaty-related issues, a core component of any public sector or public law career;
  • opportunities to further your knowledge of te ao Māori and to apply that knowledge in your day-to-day work;
  • contact with Ministers and a wide range of officials;
  • autonomy in terms of taking charge of files and client relationships;
  • opportunities to mentor and develop junior staff.
We would like to talk to people with a range of skill-sets. We are interested in applicants with:
  • strong analytical skills, practical problem-solving skills and people skills;
  • strong oral and written communication skills;
  • knowledge and understanding of te ao Māori, the relationship between tikanga and the legal system and the Crown's responsibilities as a Treaty partner (or a willingness to develop and apply that knowledge and understanding).
Public sector experience is desirable but not essential.
You will be joining an organisation that values diversity, work-life balance and flexibility, and prides itself on creating opportunities for team members to develop their skills and experience. We take pride in all we do, value our differences, look after the mana of other people, recognise our impact on others and care about each other. Having knowledge and understanding of te reo Māori and tikanga Māori is recognised and valued within the organisation.
