Have you got what it takes to shape Aotearoa New Zealand's tomorrow?
This is an exceptional opportunity to bring your data analytics skills to our annual Budget process. Joining our team will see you working in a caring and collaborative team environment, advancing your skills and career, while shaping a better tomorrow for all New Zealanders.
Mō mātou | About Us
At The Treasury Te Tai Ōhanga we're creating a better future for New Zealand and everyone who calls our amazing country home. We're the Government's economic and financial advisor, working hard to raise the standard of living for everyone in Aotearoa, now and in the future.
Our talented people bring their diverse backgrounds and experiences to tackling New Zealand's biggest and most inter-connected issues. Every day, they are influencing, advising, and supporting Ministers, Crown CEOs and Government decision-makers to shape our country's collective tomorrow.
Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the Role
The Budget Team leads the co-ordination and delivery of the government's annual Budget, supporting Budget strategy, design, ministerial decision-making and production. We also act as advisors to other Treasury teams on managing policy proposals with financial implications.
In this role you will lead the Treasury's data management and reporting requirements for the Government's annual budget process. The type of work you will typically do includes:
  • Collating data from different sources to present to Ministers and Senior Officials on the state of the Budget package as a whole
  • Working with other system teams to understand and communicate the impact of Budget decisions on fiscal indicators
  • Managing relevant budget data and information
  • Providing assurance of data quality and accuracy
  • Managing the interface of the budget process with the Crown's Financial Information System database (CFISnet)
  • Communicating with stakeholders (including other public service agencies)
  • Mentoring and supporting others in the team, both those directly working on data analysis and those using data in their work.
Ō pūmanawa | About You
This important work takes a special kind of person with a passion for making a difference and getting things done. We are committed to employing people, with a wide range of academic, cultural and social backgrounds and experiences, who represent the New Zealand community we serve.
You will have previous data and reporting experience, preferably in the New Zealand public sector context, and be able to integrate analytics into impactful advice for decision-makers. The budget process is dynamic and can be fast paced at times; you will need to be flexible and be able to work under pressure to deliver quality advice.
Specific technical expertise you will bring include:
  • Experience in data collection, analysis and presentation, and integrating analytics into impactful advice.
  • Well-developed numerical literacy, critical thinking, data manipulation, logic, and analytical skills.
  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Power BI, or other data visualisation software.
  • Strong written and verbal skills with the ability to communicate issues and concepts clearly, succinctly and with influence, including the ability to translate analysis into outputs which are easily interpreted by a variety of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
An understanding of New Zealand's public finance system (and financial management tools) is desirable but not essential - these skills can be learned on the job.
Ko ngā hua | What we Offer
This is an important job and that's why we'll do all we can to support your success. Flexible work arrangements and five weeks annual leave, along with a range of other health and wellbeing initiatives, will help you enjoy a positive work/life balance. Our numerous social events, sports teams and employee networks will enable you to connect and have fun.
The wharenui, at the heart of our workplace, embodies our commitment to diversity and making this an inclusive place that will welcome the unique experiences and perspectives you bring to our collaborative team culture.
We'll prioritise your development, offering you opportunities to train and advance your chosen career. The work will stimulate and challenge you, helping you learn, grow and build valuable experience and skills.
